| I curently have a 115 mercury 4 srtroke on my 2003 18.5 seahunter. Im having some problems getting out of the hole and feel that my hole shot is very slow!! Do you guys think that my boat is underpowerd and does anyone have any sugestions for my problem. Let me know I am eager to hear what you guys think. I am also considering getting a 2 stroke 150, because i heard that the 2 strokes have better tourque. Is that true??

| | I have an E-Tec and hole shots are lazer fast for me. I have also heard that 2 strokes get up quicker and so far I believe it. Before replacing an entire motor however, try changing the prop first. The pitch and size of the prop make a HUGE difference. When we first got our E-TEC the prop was too small and we could not hardly get it on a plane at all, but we changed that prop and now it will pin your ears back! Talk to a boat and or motor dealer about props. That is a much easier purchase than a new motor!
I once had a bad day of fishing, but it was still great! CHB: the few, the proud, the chosen |

| | Definitely lower the pitch on your prop. I tried a prop that was 2 inches more pitch, and it would take 20-30 or more seconds to get on plane, went back to my old pitch and would "jump" on plane in 3 to 5 seconds. If your prop is 14x19, (just as an example), try dropping it down 2 inches to a 14x17. (your diameter and pitch should be stamped on the side of your current prop). This will allow the motor to run more in its "power" RPM range. Talk to the shop you buy the prop at, they will usually allow you to run them for a short period of time and exchange for another if its not the proper pitch. You might also consider calling the boat manufacturer and see what they ship as "standard" for your boat. It sounds like your current prop is too much, which will also add extra stress on your motor, lower unit, and prop hub. Keep the old prop on board as a "get me home" spare, just in case you spin a hub or hit an obstruction and damage your new one. I am 99% positive its a prop issue, but let us know what you find out..... chumhead
