LAFITTE, La. – On Thursday afternoon, as redfish pro Blair Wiggins described the area his teammate Tadd Vandemark had found during practice for the Wal-Mart FLW Redfish Series event in Lafitte, Wiggins remarked, “…I think he may have found the jackpot.”

Indeed, it’s starting to look like Vandemark has found the jackpot, as the Florida-based team more than doubled their 15 pounds, 15 ounces from Thursday with 16 pounds, 5 ounces today to take the lead in the Western Division event with a two-day total of 32 pounds, 4 ounces.

“It was just an awesome day,” said Wiggins, still riddled with excitement from a last-minute flurry of redfish action this afternoon. “In the last 20 minutes, everything just went ballistic. The pogies moved in, then the big jacks moved in – I caught a 45-pound jack – and then the big reds moved in. Tadd and I and Kevin Shaw and his partner – all four of our rods were doubled over for 20 minutes straight before we had to leave.”

Wiggins and Vandemark fished the same honeyhole near Venice, La., that produced their catch yesterday, located in a deep pass off the main river that features Mississippi River water flow and deep, wood cover.

“It’s all about emerald-green water, good current, deep structure and pogies,” Wiggins said. “The green water and wood cover isn’t going anywhere, but we really need those pogies to stay around. When they show up, the reds show up, and it’s game on.”

Needless to say, the Floridians will return to their deep spot tomorrow for a shot at their first Redfish Series title.

Wiggins-Vandemark comes up short

After leading the event after day two, Blair Wiggins of Cocoa, Fla., and Tadd Vandemark of Key Largo, Fla., brought in two redfish for 13 pounds, 10 ounces to finish third with a three-day total of 45 pounds, 14 ounces, worth $6,474.

“The big ones just weren’t there today,” Wiggins remarked about their deep-water hot spot. “It took us a while to figure out where the fish had moved to, and we finally got a decent 26 ½-inch fish and another smaller one. But we could never catch another big one to get rid of the small one.”

Vandemark took a moment onstage to personally thank Mnichowski and McGill for guiding them to Venice through a safer back route during the fierce storm.

“It just goes to show the level of class and sportsmanship we have in this sport,” Vandemark said. “Here we are leading the tournament, and we asked them if we could follow them down there the back way this morning. They could have easily hung us out to dry, but instead they helped us out, and we want to thank them for that.”

What else can be added or said,

There is an excellent example of class and fair play during the contest, good show.

I did spend 13 months as a crewboat captain running to the gulf oil and gas platforms and Venice was my company's home base.Morgan City and Intracoastal City were a couple of pick up points as was Cameron,La.  Altho I was drafting 7-9ft in the 87-120ft crewboats I ran and I did have radar. The south delta is full of hazards that both a flatsboat and crewboat could get into some trouble with. It took me some time to figure where not to run but the local guys I befriended gave me some good information you won't see on a chart or a coastal pilot the Coast Guard publishes.

Congrats on the showing Capt Blair!

Congratulations to Team Lazer Sharp!  Capt. Blair and Tadd had those Louisiana boys nervous.

Make sure you guys check out the show when it airs.  The storm that changed the conditions so drastically on day 3 is on film, and it will make for very dramatic television!  Don't miss it. . .
