Some people use the anti reverse instead of the drag to fight small mouth bass up here on the great lakes.75 or 100 smallies will put alot of twist in the line when they take drag.

Wow, I just cant imagine attempting that. Seems like it not be a very consistent method of drag, not to mention incredibly risky on the fingers.

It is strange how most fisherman do not even use the option yet it still comes standard with most spinning reels.

I once had a bad day of fishing, but it was still great!

When they're not jumping Smallmouths make alot of fast"stabs"trying to get to cover or the bottom. The guys that leave the anti reverse off "back reel" to keep up with them.

It's kind of strange to me when I see them doing it. I don't use that method myself ,just don't try it enough to get used to it.I trim and change my line pretty often anyway.

Sometimes when I'm drifting a bait back into a slick I'll take the antireverse off and reverse reel to match the current flow (instead of opening the bail ). This allows me to strike faster , but I do get my knuckles busted on occasion. Also, slow reverse reeling is a great way to present a bait to suspended fish directly underneath the boat( instead of dropping to the bottom and then reeling up). The slow presentation of a bait fluttering down can bring some savage strikes, so again you've got to watch out for your knuckles. Just keep a tight grip on the reel's handle.
