| | I believe that the anti-reverse, was designed for freshwater fishing, where you would be using very light line, and also didn't want the noise of the drag, spooking the fish or breaking the line. You would just give him a little line instead. I had some older abu garcia reels when I was a kid and it actually had the words "freshwater" and "saltwater" printed on the reels. It would be useful if you were going to keep your rod inhand at all times, or finesse fishing with a worm, or where the bite would be so subtle that the fish could nibble the bait off the hook, or even swallow it before you would knew it. You would just be more involved. That's the extent of what I know about it, of coarse I never use it either LOL. Mike

| | Its gotta be a 'freshwater thing'....I watched Bill Dance or somebody talk about reverse reeling while fighting a fish......yeah, I'd like to see him do that with a large snook or redfish, lol..... the drag works just fine for me, like the MoganMan himself always likes to say..... "Music......Sweet Music!" I never use the reverse feature, and agree, it seems to be just another thing to fail. My old Penn 4200SS was one of my favorite reels....but the anti-reverse would fail within weeks of being repaired at the shop, every time (and usually bust a knuckle while fighting a fish). It now sits on a shelf in retirement. I could easily do without a reverse gear.... chumhead

| | Yeah I got one retired as well, somethin about gettin your knuckles chewed off in saltwater, when it is less than 30 degrees outside. Maybe after we get these Mogan Man rods going, we can work on the Mogan Man reels.
I once had a bad day of fishing, but it was still great! CHB: the few, the proud, the chosen |

| | I wish I could find a reel with no anti-reverse switch and a baitrunner. I've begged Okuma to release one, but to no avail. I've NEVER used the anti-reverse on a reel, for ANYTHING. I've always thought it was one more thing to break. I HAVE lost fish due to the anti-reverse switch though. accidentally hit the switch when picking up a rod or while fighting a fish... my $.02

| | Thanks for the answers guys! I can bring in a Mogan red, but I still have no idea what I'm talking about, most of the time! LOL DON'T Confuse me with DETAILS! That's what I say! Interestingly enough, I frequently pay for that attitude!

| | This is a foreign concept to me. I thought that the whole purpose of the anti-reverse was to ensure a positive hook-up when one sets the hook on said fish. In addition, it ensures you won't give up too much slack while fighting said fish, and it allows the drag to work for you. I've never heard of people complain about anti-reverses, but bear in mind I'm from St. Louis, MO, and I saltwater fish once or twice a year at most. For the catfishing I do, I use my old Abu Garcia baitcasters. Everything else is with a flyrod or a small spinning reel for bass and panfish. What do you guys think of Shimano Sustain and Stradics? How about the new Penn Slammers and Affinity reels? Van Staal? Some people mentioned about baitrunners, what do people here think about Shimano's Thunnus? While we're on the topic of reels, what about baitcasters? It seems that the Calcutta is the standard by which others are measured. I've used a Penn 965 while striper fishing in Arkansas once, and it seemed well built but difficult to cast. The reason I ask these questions is because I'm considering buying some travel tackle in the near future (Calcutta TE 400, some sort of spinning reel, etc). Thanks. |

| its not the anti reverse people are not liking.. its the switch that allows you to use either anti or free... people dont like the free spooling option... they would rather see the reels just plain anti reverse and not have a lil switch that can break...
