I like shooting long range, but also the cost of slugs are insane. What is a good shotgun to get where i can use a slug, preferably a sabot slug from Hornady--looks like an Artillery round--and buckshot/birdshot?

Which is better, rifled barrel or non-rifled?

I got a new job at my college, with more pay and Ive always wanted to get a shotgun for recreational use and also home defense since the pesky kids around here decided to form a gang, 2 gangs actually! This is where the birdshot or buckshot would come into play, because the sabot slug would go through them and out the other side, and i hate the fact of harming someone due to someone else.

Any ideas on which type of shotgun to get?

Thanks!!!!!!

If you're using this as self-defense, you really don't want a bird shot.

Look into a pump-action 410 shotgun. Mossberg has one brand new for around 400. Also if you're really thinking your life is in danger, get your concealed permit. Nothing under 9mm. Before you do all of this, please read the rules if you're in school. Don't get a gun if you can't have one where you're at.

Either way, Hornaday is the way to go. Awesome self defesne rounds. I keep them loaded in my S&W .357 Those rounds will stick in the bad guy.

I loved my Mossberg 500 12ga,I had an Open Choke for Slugs to hunt Deer and Hogs, and a Full Choke for 6 shot on the Turkeys..........But kicked like a mule with slugs !!!!!!

Home Defence........Double O Buckshot,...Cut Em in Half !!!!!!!!!

Hey boxcar, I'm in Florida, and I know that we cannot carry on school property or gov't places unless the boss says its ok. I dont want to carry anything on school, just out of school. Birdshot would pepper them, but they would survive, but they would have the horrific thought that they got shot with birdshot, and it would suck to have all those pellets removed.

Double O buckshot would destroy them, and prolly would be the best home defense ammo. Hornady is my fav. type of ammo. I was thinkin about the Mossberg Mariner or a mossberg tactical

like this one.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate it. But, how can i use the hornady sabot slug if the barrel isnt rifled? I read somewhere or heard from someone that you can only use sabot slugs in rifled shottys.
