| I want a yak now lol.
I was out surfing today and I saw huge schools of spanish macs busting everywhere. I also saw 2 smoker kings skyrocket farther out. also i think i saw about an 80lb cobia. the seas where almost flat today so it would have been perfect conditions.come fall i would beable to chase the mullet run down the beach too. what kind of yak would i need for that type of fishing?

| Cracker11 (3/12/2009) I`ve seen the critter`s that stalk those mullet,and the critter`s that chase those critter`s
Might try it with a few other Yak`s......Safety In Number`s
What Tom said here is very correct. NEVER try this type of fishing alone. When playing with the kings you can encounter tarpon and shark. I took part in this type of fishing last summer and while it is incredibly exciting it is also incredibly dangerous.
Cooknfish had a 7'+ bull shark take a king he was reeling in at the side of his boat. It could have knocked him out which would have put him in the water with a couple hungry bulls. With a partner out there you have someone who can help you if you need it. I hooked into a large blacktip on the same trip. That shark just wanted to head back to the bottom 40' down. I could not dehook it alone. Cooknfish came over and while I held the shark up he was able to pull the hooks.
The shark that took Marks king became hooked as well. He was trolling 2 lures. Fighting a large bull shark is not easy so he needed me to come and grab his second rod. Last thing he needed to do was hook into a second fish or shark while fighting that bull.
Also another very important point is watching the weather. Being a surfer I bet you already do that religiously. The football players lost in the gulf are a good example of what can happen when you don't. In a kayak we have to pay more attention then boaters since we can't move as fast. At one point Cooknfish and I were over 2 miles out in the gulf. Its fun fishing but also very dangerous. Don't do it alone. Always have a buddy near and always file a float plan so someone on land will know where you are and when you should get back. If you aren't back they should call the coast guard. Things can go wrong and death is a possible outcome. I have had several great trips but I won't go out alone or without proper safety equipment.
