| Hey everybody. I have a 02' Mercury 25h 4 stroke. It has been idling rough and Friday I went to take it out and it stalled. Couldn't get it started again and now it just won't run. I'm going to try to replace the plugs and fuel filter tomorrow but I'm kinda thinking it might be the carb. Does anybody know of any one in the Brevard area that does some good work? I don't want to take it to a dealer and get ripped off! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

| Just leave it out for awhile, and see if it cures your problem.....if it does, you can leave it out,or replace it with a New Thermostat

| | Check the fuel filter for sure. If there is a lot of stuff in it your problem may be the ethanol in the gas is eating the fuel lines up. This has been a big problem on mercurys. I dont know about the smaller engines but in the bigger ones it has been.

| | This may sound stupid, but it happened to my on my old boat. The motor would idle fine, and run up to mid-range o.k., but once you put the throttle down, she would bog down and die. Turns out the fuel line connection at the motor had worked loose, it felt as if it was on properly, but once I gave a tug on the fuel line it popped right off. You may want to un-clip, clean and re-install.....its only a 30 second job and it may be the problem. Good luck.... chumhead

| i have a 91 evinrude 25hp engine and i have had a few problems with my idling, starting, fuel lines, ect. first time it would not start at all, the ethanol eaten a hole in a few fuel lines, the second time, my boat just died and would not start back up, or anything, that time it was the fuel pump, i've seen many 25 horse engines and alot have the same general fuel pump, the fuel pump, pumps off the compression of the engine pistons and the pressure pushes a rubber seal back and fourth pulling gas into the engine, the seal in mine got a hole in it, and i talked to a few ppl at brevard marine and they said that the fuel pump seal would go every few years. after i fixed that it ran like a champ, till one night i hit a bouy in the port and it messed up my carb, my boat would idle fine, then once i put it in gear, it was done for, and would not start again for about 8 hours. it turned out that the carb just needed to be adjusted and cleaned, now my motor has worked like a champ for the past 4 months. but from what u say, it def sounds like a fuel problem, and the mechanics at brevard marine told me to start at the gas tank and work my way to the carb to look for fuel problems. hope my expensive fixes and problems can help ya out. but out of the 3 mess ups, i only took it to the shop once, they said %80 of the time its the fuel system.

| Thanks Jeff I'll keep that in mind. I decided to just go ahead and take it to Top Notch Marine at Pineda and US1. At least with the info you guys gave me I'll be able to tell if they're gonna try to BS me.
I had the fuel line come right off of the tank before so it may need cleaning as well.
I have an idea! Why don't the moderator of the forum open up a section for outboard repairs, electronics and such. That way people may be able to come together and help each other out so they don't get taken to the cleaners at a dealership!
