Well......

got out to mosiquito lagoon in the canoe with me and my brother seeing if we can find another spot for reds.....seeing that i know nothing about where fish will be i figured we'll just try the "whale tail"......turns out its a popular spot to fish b/c there was prob. 8-10 boats already there by 6:30-7:00

we put in along the road that follows the lagoon on the west side right across from "the tail".....

started throwing topwater hoping for some morning big trout.....caught plenty of small trout (prob. 4-5 each) then i hook the monster....28" on a skitter walk, im not really in it for the food so i let her back on her way......

finally paddle out to the tail......even with all the boats out there we seen some reds cruising around......managed to have one on for a second with a gulp jerkbait but he got off.......ended up on a weedline in about 1' of water with small reds everywhere......we had DOA shrimp, Gulp jerkbait, Chunks of mullet and crab but no luck getting one to the boat.....did have a nice hit on the chunk of mullet but i guess she spit it back out.....lame!

hour or so later, got tired of spooking reds and not catching any....we move back to the west shore.......my brother somehow managed to catch a mang and a 4" pinfish on a spoon so i threw the pinfish out on a float in hope for another monster trout or somthing....

an hour or so of drifting south on the west shore the line starts screaming out of my baitcaster with the pinfish, look back see the wake and splash the size of dolphin........only to miss the monster fish....

finally drift about a mile south and get into another school of bigger reds but they just laughed at my gulp jerkbait with a perfect cast and continued on.....we headed in from there....

so i missed 3 big fish and couldn't get any dang redfish besides the one to bite......i have no idea what im doing wrong.....

Your not doing anything wrong, that's the Whale Tail. If you notice you were catching fish before and after you got on the whale tail. Those fish are so pressured in the south end that they get lock jaw real quick. Majority of the time I go south I will work the shorelines and let the dozens of other boats work the schools on the tail itself. I haven't had much luck pulling fish out of the schools down there when there are other boats already working them, but most of the singles will hit what your throwing. Just keep at it and work the areas the others can't get to with out having that canoe.

Nice trout, that would have made for a killer picture...no camera
