| | I've been using the DOA glow shrimps lately for night fishing around docks and bridges, and have found if I use them right out of the package that it results in quite a few missed hook sets, even though I eventually land a few fish in spite of it. I have always used Owner hooks for live bait, including shrimp, and have very rarely missed a good strike. I'm wondering if using an Owner hook(or any sharp hook) and rigging it like I do a live shrimp may get me more hook sets as a result of the hook position on the bait changing, and also the hook being much sharper? What are the pros and cons of using them out of the package as opposed to being more creative? Please give me your thoughts on this..thanks! |

| If your getting a lot of short strikes you can always put some scent on them, sometimes that will entice the fish to bit and commit (believe it the real thing) to the bate a little better. I've experimented with different methods of rigging and no mater what if the fish isn't committed your going to get the short strikes.

| I agree with fish4reds. You can always add some scent to the lure. I love using the Carolina Lunker Sauce Shrimp Scent. Not only can you use it on the DOA shrimp, you can use it on other artificals and live bait . |

| | Here is something I like to do to trick out the shrimp and get better hooksets: This shrimp is unbelievable - # 382 Silver Holographic - DOA 1/4 oz - 3" shrimp - tricked out. Rigging Tips - "Tricking out the DOA - 3" - 1/4 oz. shrimp": What really has been working in spite of the weedy and windy conditions along the beach is the DOA # 382 Holographic shrimp. It has been a real go to lure when the conditions get tough. The fish really hit it hard and when I'm not fishing in tournaments which restrict modifying lures; I trick my DOA shrimp out to give me a huge advantage. I start by putting an Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp 3/0 or 4/0 Worm Hook (LO95XBLG) which has the plastic holding barbs on it in the 1/4 oz sized shrimp as this creates a wider gap than the standard 2/0 hook which comes with the lure. I think the wider gap helps me stick more fish especially when using braided lines in the 10 - 15 lb range. I like the fact that the hook is very sharp and the black color of the hook just blends in with the lure. I use 25 - 30 lb Gamma Fluorocarbon leader tied to the shrimp via the Canoeman's loop knot, although with the turbidity of the water lately, standard mono should also work. Finally, I slip a Woody's elongated plastic worm rattle in the cavity on the bottom of the shrimp below the hook as this creates a little rattling sound when I pop the lure. You can use some super glue if needed to seat the shrimp (I use Loctite Super Glue - Reorder # 01-30380) if needed. This super glue comes in a 4 gram bottle (gel) that you squeeze along the sides. It's the only one I've found that does not dry out after you use it! Snook and especially seatrout are crushing this color along Manasota Key but it will work anywhere along the beach and on the flats. Give it a try and I'm sure you'll be impressed!

Here is my newest modification.....adding chartreuse color on the tail of the # 382 Silver Holographic Shrimp by using Spike-It Worm Dye! Works really well and aids in being able to see the shrimp while making presentations to snook in the surf! I also add it to the standard Nite-Glo color because the dye makes it much brighter than the regular Glo/Chartreuse tailed shrimp that DOA makes which is color # 385. It also works when you can't find the #385 color in local tackle stores so you can just make your own by dipping the tail of the #305 Nite-Glo color!
Hope this helps! Tight Lines,

| | Quick question for KenT, do you put the rattle in with the weight on the doa shrimp or do you take the weight out ? Didn't know if they would both fit ? |

| yep they both fit that's what i do to my DOA Shrimps. the worm rattle seems to help a lot... also any kind of scent works. spike it/ lunker sauce / gulp alive spray etc.

| | Yes, I slide the rattle in the little hole on the underside of the shrimp that is just below the hook. I don't usually remove the keel designed weight but you could if you didn't want the shrimp to sink very fast and just substitute the rattle for the weight. You can also rig the shrimp weedless if needed but I usually like the traditional rig since I want the shrimp to fall away from the fish so it can get hit from behind. They usually hit it on the fall so make sure you let it fall to the bottom and snap it off the bottom, then let it fall again but make sure you let it fall long enough to hit bottom. Letting the shrimp fall to the bottom is the key! Scent also helps especially in turbid water. I use Lunker Sauce on occassion. Would like to know if the Gulp spray works. Anyone using it with success?
