| ok so i finally used my fly rod in the setting i wanted to when i bought it a year ago...
i walked the beach looking for snook this morning. i dont know what the deal is but where there should have been hundreds of snook i only saw 2 small schools... i got 3 casts on them and then spent 3 hours blind casting into areas that looked good... i did have 1 snook take a close look at my fly but passed on it...
3 theories as to why the fish didnt eat... 1.) it wasnt hungry. this is a good guess since all the others people i saw who were throwing live baits and arties all they had between them all morning was 1 snook on a jig and 1 rat red on a greenie...
2.) wrong fly... i dont think this was it cause i had a fly that matched the bait that was in the area.... its a deciever type pattern with a white body and a few green feathers on the back... looks nice in the water... very similar to a green back...
3.) wrong retrieve... very possible! since i really dont know what i am doing out there... i did try short fast strips... long fast strips... slow and short and fast short... i honestly felt the fly looks better with a short quick and short slow.... the fast long seem to compress the fly too much... maybe that makes sense... i dunno...
i would love to hear some opinions from those of you that have caught fish on fly...
also when wading the beach does it help to have your excess line out of the water... does the line floating in the water create drag when trying to shoot your line? how do you keep ready for a quick cast when walking the beach? (those snook are not going to wait for me to cast) can you walk and cast?
ok there are a few questions... lets hear some ideas....
still searching for my first fish on fly...

| | Fly fishing is alot harder. #1: Your lure selection is limited to what can be casted for the weight rod you have. #2: You cannot cast as far as easily or as quickly as you could with spinning gear. #3: Wind is heck I have caught all the main fish I usually catch with my fly rod except a redfish, which I am sure if just set the spinning reel down (leave it home) I would get my red. I prefer lures that do not require much action like shrimp or crab imitations. Just throw out and let it drift in the current with slight twitches. I usually am a slow presentation kind of guy for the most part anyway. Of course as you know, I couldn't tell ya anything about snook in particular.

| thats what it took for me to pick up the flyrod... i left everything else at home... although i didnt catch anything i was pleased with my cast... i had a wind hitting my back so it made my back casts a lil harder but i was still able to make good casts. my rod is a 9 weight so it should handle most flys (within reason) that i would throw for snook and reds.
the damag from the red tide last year is showing itself now... i am not seeing many snook spawning... i wonder how long that will last...

| | Here's a fly a fella in Texas ties that is slap KILLER! He sells 'em on ebay, usually in 3 different sizes, and I've seen the bidding on a set of three go up as high as $45... and the're well worth it, because they work.
He ties them from Mylar and makes a sinking and floating type. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZtexperdQQhtZ-1

| Wow, those are nicey nice. I got an 8 wt vlap so I am kinda limited a bit more on what I can throw. Sure wish I could cast on the flats like I do in the yard with no fly on.

| Yeah I broke down and bought a set of them (jumped 'em for $20!) and a set of six clousers in various colors (about $3.50) and discovered that my 3yo had gotten into my flyrod... I have to re-rig it all, and I'm embarrassed to admit I don't remember how! I actualy lost the threadfin flies using them on ultra-light gear spot-casting trout when I met Mr. Redfish instead. (watch the trout run up on a sandbar popping bait, flick the fly out there and let it sink) gotta get some more.
