| I have a 2005 50hp Johnson thats leaking a little oil by the prop. I would like to believe its just 2 stroke oil not burned of cause she smokes a little. I'm hoping its not a prop seal leaking crudded up gear case oil. Any suggestions?

| | Clean off the Prop area real good with soap and water........Dry,and let sit overnight. If it is just Blow-By from the motor, the prop area should stay clean and dry.....but if you get a small puddle of Oil the next day, change your seal . Lower Unit Oil has a Funky Smell like Gear Oil {80-90w},and is much thicker than 2 stroke. Lower Unit Oil will leak from the backside of the prop,blow-by will be comming from Exhaust Hope this helps

| Thanks Cracker! I think its the bad one. Its leaking from behind the prop onto the skeg. Know any mechanics in the Orlando/Apopka area thats reputable?

| Not realy,I have a 9.9 that I do all the work on myself, but I turn Wrenches ALL DAY,so it`s not a big deal for me It`s not a hard job,not sure about that exact model, but once you get your Prop off,the seal goes around the Output Shaft.... Put a catch pan under the lower unit, remove the Fill and Drain Screw`s from the side of the foot and alow oil to drain....Remove Prop, pop out the seal, clean surface, put a light touch of oil on the Seal Edge where it touches the shaft, and tap the new seal back in being careful not to distort the seal......before putting the Prop back on, fill lower unit with oil.... This should take about 2 or 3 bottles of gear oil......fill from the Drain Hole, forcing it up in the unit until it comes out the Fill Hole, then Instal the Fill Screw....then the Drain Screw......I know it sounds BackAzzWards, but you get no Air-Pockets .......check the Seal Area,if no leaks, install the Prop, put it in Nutural, spin the Prop by hand a few times so that the oil that you put on the seal is spread around the shaft to assure the seal doesn`t get torn by a Dry Shaft. Taking the Prop off from time to time, and removing any Fishing Line that gets wrapped up behind it,will keep ya from having to do this seal as much I work at the corner of 17-92 and 436 {Car Cool} if your close to the shop, grab the Seal and Oil and swing in,we`re SLOW,I`d be glad to show ya how to do it

| I might take you up on that. I tried to give it a shot on Sunday but realized thats one big nut on the prop. I'm going to get a 1" socket and go at it. If I have any probs, I'll holler at ya.
Thanks,
