Took some kids fishing with the florida sherifs youth ranch on saturday. I met the kids and the people in charge at Emerson Point kayak launch.
After getting the kids used to being in canoes I led them through the mangrove tunnels into terra ceia bay. Once on the open water we started fishing. We explained to the kids where and how to catch fish. We all drifted apart but soon some of the boys were able to catch a fish or two.
Jeff and I were drifting some deeper water and found a steady trout bite. At one point the bite was solid enough that as Jeff hooked into a trout on top water he yelled to me that there were fish following. I made a long cast into the area and immediately hooked up. Jeff being the sportsman he is put the rod that had a fish on it and grabbed a second rod and cast it out. Whammo a third fish was hooked.
I quickly dehooked my fish and paddled closer to Jeff and caught a shot of him with his 2 fish on.

We continued with the trout for some time and I even pulled out the flyrod and was able to hook some trout on the fly.

As the tide pushed in so did the fish and soon we found some snook laying up in the potholes. We got out and started casting to them. At one point a snook came up from under Jeff's topwater and got an incredible strike by the largest snook I have seen in some time. I have never seen a snook the size of it jump as high as this one did. Unfortunately it happened so fast that Jeff was able to come tight and set a hook. This snook got away.
A bit later Jeff did manage to hook into a nice snook that was unable to throw the hook.

We were working with one of the kids trying to get him on a fish and after a few tries he finally hooked into a nice fish. A short fight later he was able to land a nice little grouper.

Soon after we headed in for a nice lunch of hotdogs on the grill. It definately was a fun day on the water and a pleasure to be a positive influence in these kids lives.

Vegetarian: Old Indian word for bad fisherman.
