i was fishing a low tide today and could see a cluster of snook and a few red fish sitting out in the water and i kept casting in front of them and retrieving it past them but nothing would bite? Does anyone have any tips on how to present a lure to a snook or red fish and what kind of lures are best for sight casting? thanks

Sometimes they just dont want to eat, and other times it has a lot to do with your gear and how you present the bait/lure to them.  How far you are from them also has a lot to do with it.  Generally speaking if you can see them they they can probably see you.  If you are lucky enough to get up to them without spooking or shutting down the bite then you need to cast about 15 to 20 feet in front of them and let the bait/lure fall to the bottom.  Let it sit there for about a minute or so.  Once it has settled to the bottom, give it a pop to make it jump off the bottom and let it sit again.  Watch the fish to see if they are alerted to the movement, if they are let it sit there a little longer and then slowly- very slowly reel it in about 5 feet and stop there.  Let it sit again and see what their reaction is if they are hungry and actively feeding within a couple moves they should explode on the bait/lure.  These fish a leader shy so if your using too heavy of leader they will see it and not go for the bait.  I recommend using twenty pound flouro. or less in clearer water conditions.  I also dont use swivels when tieing line to line as it messes up the presentation and also lets them see your line easier.  Try out these tips and I hope that they work for you.  Good luck and remember, its called fishing, not catching so sometimes you just wont get them......

hey man the key wit sightfishin is LIGHT LINE!!!!!! im talkin like leader no heavier than 20 flouro them snook got nowhere to run u to if ur sightin em and 20 is more than enough for reds.....another thing is if ur fishin that shallow those fish are usually feedin on really small bait or crustaceans, so use live shrimp, gulp shrimp (no jighead u may spook em) or doa shrimp.....good luck man this should help

thanks i bet thats my problem, for one thing i was using 40 pound leader and it wasn't even fluorocarbon and second i think i was casting to close to them. What is the best fluorocarbon line cause ive been using Andes leader? Ill definitely try using the softbaits and keeping it small. thanks a lot

i feel ur pain sometimes when you see the fish there is a pretty good chance they see you too. the best thing to do in that situation is to back off them for a lil bit and come bac really carefully and live bait never hurts I've been in that situation many times before staring at 30 inch trout that got lock jaw..

take a gulp 4" shrimp cut of the tail and hook a circle hook through it at the second joint stay as far away from the school as possible and make your cast land a little ways in front of them let it sink and twitch it once then let it set most of the time they wont turn it down. and remember clear water light color, dark water dark color.

When in doubt, cast it out. Anything that looks out of the ordinary deserves a cast.

I once had a bad day of fishing, but it was still great!
