I have a 93 Suzuki 9.9hp that I use on my 14' Johnny, have had it for a little over 5 years now, cleaned the Carb/New Plug`s when I first got it, to get it running{Prrrrrrrring like a kitten}and has been the best darn motor I`ve ever owned.....Two pull`s in the morning to get her going, then one pull for the rest of the day.......

But over the past couple of month`s,it has started to run poorly, getting harder to start, and has now moved to Power Loss and Strange Hissing Noises, and even one Lock-Up after sitting a few days.....thought I had Carb Problems,so I Rebuilt the Carb,New Plug`s........it would run great for a few mins, then spit and sputter........so while bringing the boat back to my shop, the Right Slipper Spring broke at the Axle ,so with an extended stay,I started looking at the Power Head, getting ready to snatch it off,and I see this little Round Cover.........Then it Dawned on me, The Thermostat.....Man,Do I Feel Stupid.......3 Bolt`s{Two broke off in the head}and the cover was off.....the thermo looked like a Mud Covered Oyster ........had to pry it out.....Flushed it good,Drilled out the broken bolts, installed the cover, and ran it in the drum for an hour.......Runs like new

Not sure what damage has been done,I`m sure being overheated has not made it a better motor,I still need to take it out for a Power Run...but thats tomorrow....

My Question Is :

Should I replace the Thermostat,or just Toss it and leave it Open ?

Will it effect the Idle much during the colder month`s ?

I understand they are cheap, thats not the problem....I run in shallow most of the time,Mud,Shell,Sand....I don`t want this to Overheat again,I would rather leave it out unless someone has taken one out of thier Small Outboard, and had trouble with the Idle.

I will take your advice and buy one for the Dry-Box

I dont have any experience with marine engines but with an automotive engine temp will run hotter sometimes if you remove the thermostat. This is due to the water circulating to quickly to be cooled properly. To be sure could ask any boat tech. and they should know. I would hate to see a good motor ruined I also hate to see anyone loose time on the water.  Good luck and good fishing.

Thanks.......Been an ASE Cert. Auto Tech for about 18 years now,but not that much time with Outboard Motor`s........I know that the new Digital Controled Motor`s are very touchy about the Motor Temp, but wasn`t sure how it would effect this older motor

I`ve had it out several times sence then, and I must say that it does effect the Idle on the first start up{Little Low},but after that it`s fine.....in fact,it runs better on the Top-End

I say ........Trash the Thermostat, before it trashes the motor........Like I almost did

Thanks for the Reply

Not often.......but if it`s that cold, almost garenteed....I`ll be out there fishing in it

It does effect it,but only with a touch higher Idle, for the first few minutes of the day .
