I'd do a lot of research on 6-8 wt reels and rods, get a feel for what seasoned anglers prefer, and then haunt eBay until I found some quality used gear. Better to buy quality stuff that's seen some use than cheap crap that won't hold together long. In truth, I think you'll need to spend more than $100 to get good gear - probably more like $200.

At least that's my take.

For $100 you can get a nice rod. The TFO Lefty Kreh signature series is a nice rod at $100. You have to get a reel but for @ 20-30 you can get an okuma airframe. A nice reel with very smooth drag. This takes you to $130.
Now you need line. This is a very important aspect of flyfishing. You want to spend 40-60 on line to get something castable. I tried a $20 line and could not get the rod to load at all. A better line and the rod was something different. It made all the difference in the world.

Unfortunately this takes you over $180 but better equipment will make a difference in your experience.

Buy a piece at a time til you put it all together.

A rod-building buddy of mine is in the progress of making me a custom 6 wt using a quality TFO blank, St Croix grips and reel seat, Fuji guides, etc. Will cost me half or even a third of what a "high end" rod would cost, will be under warranty, and will be overbuilt. I'm matching it with a Teton Tioga reel - a quality product that performs on par with many far more expensive options. I'll pay a premium for good line - likely Orvis Wonderline - since it can do wonders for your casting. All told I'll pay about between $300-$350 for the complete outfit, and it'll catch fish just as well as, say, a "premium" rod and reel...which could easily run well over $1500.

I use my equipment to catch fish, not to impress other anglers. If that's the case with you, you can get into a quality outfit for about the same price. Personally, I think there's a number under which you will find only crap, and a number over which you are overpaying for basic tools. In my humble opinion, that "happy medium" number is about what I'll be paying for the rig described above.

Of course, if I had money coming out my ears, maybe I'd feel different. But I doubt it.

its going to hard getting a complete outfit for 100 bucks but every Christmas bass pro does a deal for a complete outfit for 160 but if you can't wait that long the temple fork outfitters low end rod is great to start out with and you can find good starter reels for under 30 bucks the line is the most expensive. i paid 70 for scientific angler bonefish line but i found some line on ebay for 30 to 40. check www.microskiff.com and www.inshore-fishing.com they always have someone on there who has fly stuff lying around and could give you a good deal just ask around and eventually the stuff will show up i would suggest at least 8 weight for fishing anything inshore good luck with the search
