| A good all around outfit is a 9wt!!! You may want to check out new TFO rods, their top of the line rod is fairly inexpensive and was very impressive!! As far as a reel, you don't need to get something super expensive if your only chasing reds and snook. Something with an OK drag will do just fine. I have a Tibor Backcountry Light CL on my 8wt setup... it works great and is a bargain!!!

| | Loaded question for sure. There are as many opinions on this as there are fly-fishers. My waters up here in the northern Indian River Lagoon and Mosquito Lagoon, that I fish, are eighteen inches or less. My ideal rod/reel/line combinations are either an eight or nine weight rod. I prefer a fast rod and my "go to" rod is a Sage RPLXi nine weight, or a Loomis GLX (8 wt) and TFO TiCrX eight weight. My reels are mostly Valentines, in single action or a Planetary, and my favorite nine weight is a Marryat Plus. Favorite line is a Scientific Angler Aircel Supreme II weight-forward, floating line, or a Jim Teeny line in bright green for the eight-weight. Tapered 9' 8 pound leader (Climax) and a twenty-four inch 20 pound shock, or bite tippet. I really don't have any snags to worry about up here. However, fishing the 'Glades, it's a whole different set up as far as leaders go when fishing the mangroves for big snook. Then it's double Bimini twists with the tippet in the middle of the leader. I tie a take-off of Chico's bend-back in all gold except for the under-wing which is white, or a big, deer hair mullet-slider for big trout and snook in the early morning or late in the afternoon at sunset. The hairbugs are usually tied in no less that a 1/0 or 2/0, and the golden bend-backs are usually anywhere from a size two to 1/0. I seldom throw anything lighter than an eight-weight because of wind or size of the flies. |
