| | Took the yak out a couple of weeks ago in the Banana River as the sun was coming up. Started paddling to my spot and saw the boils in the water of a manatee crossing in front of me, so I stopped and waited till it was a good ways past me. I was only in about 3 ft of water, thought I was in the clear and started paddling again. Well, unknown to me, there was another manatee under the kayak. As soon as I started to move, the manatee became REAL upset! Came up under the kayak, flipped me out of the yak, flipped it over, out went my fly rod and paddle, and it proceeded to beat the water with it's tail that looked like depth charges going off every 2-3 feet. Neither one of us was very happy about what had happened. I stood up, righted the yak, found my fly rod and paddle, got back in and started paddling again. Needless to say,I was gun-shy the rest of the morning. Lucky I put my keys and wallet in the dry storage, or I would have had a bad day. And I still caught a decent trout on a#2 popper so it wasn't a totally bad day. |

You gotta love those early morning wakeup calls. Its happened to me a few times and its always before the sun comes up. They hate to be woken up.

| How COOOOL!!! Easy for me to say, RIGHT? lmao Makes me want to go search out the one that inhabits our marina up here. That still blows my mind...that we have one this far north!

| There is nothing cool about getting manatee'd. Unless the water is cool...
It is an experience that will scare the poop out of ya. Made me scream like a lil girl!

| Now THAT would be COOL to see!
I've seen the bubbles from our manatee many times, but never actually seen it, until one night, right before the Bash.
Steve and I were on the sea wall at the marina when it came by. We followed the bubbles with our lights, as far as we could, until it was gone ( on a low tide ). On a hunch, we kept scanning the water, and sure enough, it soon returned, going the opposite direction...a huge, looming shadow, beneath the surface. It was the dead of night and the water was very mucky around the marina, so our view was not clear, but I was giddy to have gotten even that brief a look at it!

| Trust me, Steph. You DEFINITELY DO NOT want to meet a manatee in your kayak or canoe in the pre-dawn hours or any other time for that matter.
DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE RABID MANATEES!!!!

My only close encounter with manatee was up here on Doctors Inlet – off the St. Johns River a little south of Jacksonville. I was out kayaking with my daughter in late afternoon and spotted a group of 4 or so. We paddled up to get a closer look, under the watchful eye of a FWC boat keeping the motorboats away.
While we watched the group from about 30 yards or so, another one came up right between our two yaks and gave us a friendly bump. No doubt if it got a little more friendly we would have been swimming.
One other time fishing in the Matanzas River, in shallow water up near a grass bank, a good-sized dolphin surfaced right beside me, bumped the boat and crashed the bank chasing fish. All I saw was gray and white and big fins and my fist thought was SHARK!
Came very close to having to rinse out the yak seat after that one.

| | Kevin and I were fishing in one of our spots in Safety Harbor when we still had the gheenoe . . . Kevin was working the trolling motor and we were both standing on platforms when a manatee started working it's way to us. At first I thought it was cute but when it came closer and closer to the trolling motor I started to think . . . this manatee can tip us over! Kevin shut off the trolling motor the manatee stopped and disappeared under the water . . . he turned it back on, the manatee came back towards us. It liked the sound or vibrations or something but I didn't feel like swimming with the manatees that day. I would definitely freak if I got flipped out of a yak by one! Good story though. Trice |
