| CooKnCrew went looking for big adventure as well as big fish and paddled straight out towards the middle of the bay. Being close to 2 miles from the launch (That's 2 miles straight out into the bay, not 2 miles down a winding stream just to reach the bay  ) we were in search of big trout and a a shot at cobia and sharks.
The big trout were there in good numbers holding out in deeper grass flats. Sharon's brother hooked into the 10# trout that I saw a couple of days before but he lost it at boatside. I caught a couple in the low 20's using Mirrolure 52M and DOA TerrorEyz.
I caught a ladyfish and put it on a hook to let it soak to see if there were any sharks in the area. I called Sharon on the cell to let her know that I had a bait out (always use the buddy system when fishing for big fish in a small boat). While I was on the phone with her, the rod went off! She started paddling towards me while I fought the fish. I could tell it wasn't a shark because it wasn't pulling hard enough. To my surprise. up popped a little kingfish. Although a small one, I can scratch another species off my list of fish caught from the yak.
It was Sharon's turn to hold the big rod. This would be her first experience of big fish fishing from the kayak so I tied my boat to her's and walked her through it. After soaking a bait for a bit, the rod doubled over and the drag started peeling off. She executed everything she needed to do very nicely and as I taught her. She pulled the anchor and cleared the cockpit before ever grabbing the rod. Meanwhile, I untied us and snapped some photos while paddling to stay right behind her for backup.
After being towed around for a few minutes, she told me she had a feeling it wasn't a shark. She reeled down on top of it and looked over the side and was disappointed to see that it was a huge stingray. She continued to get towed around for a while hoping to be able to pull it up so we could unhook it but with a ray that size we just could not get enough leverage to get it off the bottom so I broke him off. In this picture you can see a light spot on the dark bottom. That is the ray in about 8' of water over a grass bed. You can't tell how big he really was in the picture but it was in the 100# class.

| Sounds like a good time cookncrew... I would have joined you but I didn't get home from fishing till well after the sun rose. You were probably on the water before I left the pier.

| Wow, that looks like a pretty hefty rod and it has a heck of a bend in it.
I imagine that does get the adrenaline flowing especially in a kayak.
$11.50 for a hamburger, y'all must be Crazy.

| The rod is a 30# outfit but it just did not have enough backbone to lift that ray off the bottom. It works fine on shark and tarpon though. This kind of fishing is not for everyone. Experience is the most important tool you can take out there and if you don't have it, I hope your insurance is up to date.

They are there! I've seen a couple in the 30# class and had 1 barely legal cobia to the side of the boat but lost him.
The yak is my brother's.
