| | I went with my dad and bro Saturday back to our snook area on the ICWW. We also explored tons of new areas with no luck at all. To make a long story short we caught some nice flounder, a whiting, a trout, my brother caught about a 10 inch snook, busted off 2 bigguns, and I lost my snook. My bro was throwing the brown dog as my dad and I were throwin the DOA shrimp that usually produced some action. All of the sudden, my bro is hooked up hard, the drag peels, an obvious 30 inch snook comes up and wallows the surface. It then darts toward the bottom and SNAP it is all over. His leader looked like somone scraped it with a knife until it finally broke. I then tie on the brown dog. Later I pitch the dog at a palmetto in the water. Wham, snook on, I am soo excited. This was a nice fish in the upper 20's! Then I feel a weird thump almost like he just wrapped himself around the gills, then as he dives toward the bottom.. it is all over, he cuts the line on his gills. It is not yet my time I suppose.

| losening your drag can cut down on the ffect the rough lips have on a line... i have brought in 30"+ snook on 20 lb leader.... if the drag is real tight the lips will rub through quickly... i dont know if you have learned that part of snook fishing yet... a light drag can sometimes be better...

| I was not aware that the snook lips could rub through the leader. I would go easy on the drag but I fish alot of docks too in that area. Yeesh these things are giving me a fit.

| It aint the lips Matt , the gill plates are like razor blades and they know how to use them to cut a line !!

| | I was thinkin it was the gills, but vlap got me wonderin. I am going to catch one of these things if it is the last thing I do. Sure it would be easier down further south, but the fishermen in me knows the fish are there and just has to catch one. This brings up a good question I will ask in the tips and techniques section.

| | DOA, When you land one, be very careful as you check out the gill plate. It is pretty close to razor sharp. |

| FlatsKracker (5/31/2006) It aint the lips Matt , the gill plates are like razor blades and they know how to use them to cut a line !!Very true about the razor blades, but not true about the lips. A snooks lips are like sandpaper, and with a tight drag and some head shakes that leader can fray fast Thats one reason I dont take it easy on big snook once you get them out of cover, because if you just sit there and play with them, they'll eventually fray your leader. (unless your using like 50# fluro ) |

| very true... the lips are like sandpaper... check your leader after every fish... retie lures after each hookup or evey couple... the gill plate is also very dangerous... one snook i took home for dinner last year had revenge from the grave on me... i went to roll it over while filleting and my finger slipped into the gill plate... i barely touched it and yet recieved a nasty cut....
as for the fishing of docks.. yup a tight drag can turn em but at what cost...i ahve losened my drag while fighting under a dock and brought them out.... but this is what amkes snook so much fun to catch... they have weapons against us and know how to use em... it can be tough... but its also lots fun...
