I have a 2-12amp battery charger. If I were to put the battery switch on the boat to "BOTH" could I put terminals on one battery and charge both or would I have to switch to off and charge each one individually? In other words would I have to buy a second charger?

Thanks for any tips

It is too late at night for me to understand all of the question but I can tell ya this. You may want to look into a (DUAL PRO) battery charger. We have one permanently mounted in the boat between our two batterys and all you do is plug a cord into it and it charges both.

I once had a bad day of fishing, but it was still great!

I tried to post this earlier, but it wouldn't let me.  Since you identified the charger as: 2-12(2 banks,12volts), you should have two sets of cables from your charger. I'm sure you have 1 set on you trolling battery, you can rig the other set for your other battery. Check the paperwork that came with the charger. Some will charge two at once and some will switch back and forth.  Good luck.

Thanks guys for the info. I guess its time to check into an on-board charger. Probally easier. I guess I need to look into some type of 4 bank charger, I have a 24V system for my trolling motor and a starting and house battery for the boat itself.

We have the same type situation, a 24 v trolling motor (2 batteries) up front and one starting and electronics battery in the rear. Currently, all we have to do is plug in the dual pro charger to the wall outlet and it charges both trolling batteries, and for the back cranking battery I am still having to crawl in the boat and clamp em up to an outside charger... however, we will soon be rigging a special plug so that all you have to od is plugf the charger into a a port on the outside of the boat to charge the battery. Yes we have an alternator, but I like to make sure the battery is as fresh as possible.

Get you a solar powered trickle charger for your main battery and voila, no worries.  Works great, and no worring about boiling the water, over charging, etc.

the only way you could use a one bank charger on two batteries is to have a battery isolater(around 400-600 bucks).  If you simply put your swich on both one battery will always be weaker than the other.  The best solution is a on board battery chargerr as mentioned by DOA.   I recently purchased my second on board charger for my two batteries under my console where my starting and electronics batteries are at.  I bought a tho bank 10 amp charger that supplies 5 amps to each battery.  I dont remember the model num ber but it was minn  kota charger that is avail. from walmart for 100 bucks.

I say we work two days and fish five!!!!
