Looks like a great time. I'm heading to OB on May 23rd for Memorial Day. Can't wait to get back down there.

So even though I didn't do much fishing, I decided to go ahead and post up some pics of my trip down to Gulf Shores, AL.

I'll post my report here, instead of wasting space in the report section. This trip was rare in the fact that fishing didn't come first. It was a friend of mines birthday, so I kinda let them dictate what went on at the beach. I tried some surf fishing to no avail. The surf on Thursday and Friday was rough, there were no birds to speak of, so I was just chunking some shrimp out and letting it sit. I pondered going down to the pass, but bikini clad babes, and cold beer kept me planted on the beach. As the conditions began to calm, I took out some lighter tackle, and some artificial again to no avail. I was able to help a guy out who had never surf fished at all. The only constructive thing I was able to do was take the tandem spec rig off of his 8' heavy action surf rod and rig up a bottom rig for him.

I wish I had more to report, but this weekend was all about getting away from the hustle and bustle and I found myself in a relaxed state I haven't experienced in awhile. The weather was perfect, the food was great, the women were hot and the beer was cold! I will be making some weekend trips soon to get my fish on, and I will have a better report as far as fishing goes. Stay tuned to this thread and when I get my pics loaded I will put some up of how the trip went!

I Hope I didn't disappoint ya'll....

Any luck Josh? My fater-in-law snuck down to OB and caught a slot red, 3lb sheepshead, and a bunch of blues in the pass over the weekend... hoping you did even better.

There will be no kayaking. I wish I had one to paddle around the lagoon, and some of the docks around the canals...I will doing mostly surf fishing, walking the jetty at the pass, and maybe some wading, or walking around shelby lakes...I'm stoked about the trip, and there will be a full TR upon my arrival...

sometimes the pass makes a 23 footer feel small!!!!

Got a surf rod rigged up, and a couple of inshore rigs with Powerpro...I'm also gonna try and throw a krocodile spoon, gold in color, beyond the surf and see what i can drum up...DOA is tied on as well! I will be heading out Thursday Morning, and lines in the salt around 1pm. I will be waking up eaaaaaarly to head to Perdido pass and see whats swimming arund the rocks friday morning! I need a kayak!

Take the drive out to Ft. Morgan one morning or afternoon. I picked up a 25" red in the surf after golf at Peninsula in the fall on plastic. A few years back, got into some big blues in the spring out there. Take plenty of bug spray, especially at sundown.

Give the Berkly saltwater Gulps a try for the surf,the smaller bait stealers can not get them off,leaving them there for the bigger fish.,and they put out alot of scent,and stay on the hook with those long cast.The Gulp sand flea in new penny,and white work really good for Pompano,the smaller crabs work well for Reds and Trout.I've been fishing the Gulf coast for over twenty years,and the Gulps have saved me,three to four hook-ups on one bait.WOW

I'm a big fan of DOA, but not in the surf. But that's just me personally. Also the Perdido Pass I mentioned is pretty deep with a big current, so that would be tough as well.

I've never fished either location using a cork, so I'm not sure. Sorry.

Ladyfish (poor man's tarpon) very fun on 8 lb powerpro, and on a fly!

Think I would have any luck with DOA or life shrimp under a cork?

No problem. I feel your pain with the frozen shrimp. Give the live shrimp a shot. I think you'll be pleased with the results. Big fish will still be few and far between compared to chartering a boat, but you'll catch plenty.

Even if it's just a bunch of lady fish, they're still a blast to catch on light tackle.

Also, i honestly do much better early and late. Once the sun is up it bites slack off.

Thanks for the response! I'm very familiar with Top Gun Tackle, I have their sticker on my truck! The live shrimp is a good idea, we normally use frozen. I just haven't had much luck from the beach. I've been going down 3-5 times a year my whole life. I think the biggest thing going agains't me has been my lack of patience. The past couple of years I've been working hard on slowing down with my fishing (all fishing!). I can't wait to get down there in a couple of weeks!

Hey Josh.

I spend about a month a year in Orange Beach, AL (just next door to Gulf Shores). The father-in-law finally bought a boat last year, but before that we fished the surf regularly.

There are plenty of fish to be caught in the surf. The big key though is bait. Unless you want to spend the day catching small salt-cats, spend the few extra bucks to get live shrimp (Top-Gun tackle and JM in Orange Beach are good places to get it, but I'm sure Gulf Shores has some good shops as well). You can even break them in half and get two casts per shrimp, but live is the way to go.

Early morning and sunset are best times.

We’ve caught all kinds out there including cats, whiting, lady fish, reds, flounder, pompano, black drum, sheepshead and the occasional black tip shark and ray. If you can find any cover, mangrove snapper are a possibility, but your likely to get only 1 keeper out of every 20 fish.

I prefer a 1 oz sliding sinker carolina rigged with two beads and a 1/0 or 2/0 circle hook. Although some of the inlaws would use a pyramid weight with two hooks so they could leave the bait out longer.

Perdido Pass is pretty deep with lots of rock and plenty of spots to fish. It can get crowded on the weekends, but I've seen good fish caught there as well. Hope this helps.

In 2 weeks I will be in Gulf Shores, AL with some friends. It's just a weekend trip with a bunch of people so I didn't book a charter or anything, even though I want to do some inshore fishing. If I get a chance I may try to wade around the bay, or maybe fish from the bank on the lagoon or intercoastal. It looks like I will mainly be surf fishing throughout the day sipping cervezas. What are the odds of putting my DOA gear to good use on some light spinning tackle in the surf (or just beyond) while waiting on something to eat and swim off with my bait on the surf rod stuck in the beach?
