First off, thank you very much for taking the time to fill out the Fix Magnuson Now petition, for recognizing how greatly the Act has been distorted by foundation funded activists, and for wanting to be a part of the effort to set things straight. Along with the rally in Washington on February 24, this is the most effective way we have of demonstrating to Congress, and the White House, that our federal fisheries policies are sadly off course and in need of a massive correction.

We are doing very well with the petition in the Northeast and Florida, but need to continue to get the word out, particularly on the West and Gulf Coasts and in the other Southeastern states. And we'd especially like to have more seafood sellers and restaurateurs represented. If you could tell your colleagues, friends, relatives or anyone with an interest in fishing who you deal with about this campaign and how important it is to the future of fishing in the US, it would help greatly.

The responses we've had are almost evenly split between recreational fishermen and folks whose jobs depend entirely or partly on fishing. It's great to be able to be a part of a national effort that is being positively received by recreational, commercial and party/charter fishermen and the businesses they support, and with enough of us on board, it's going to be a guarantee that the people in Washington will hear us.

While on the topic of Washington, if your Congressman or Congresswoman or your Senators aren’t co-sponsoring Senator Schumer’s or Congressman Pallone’s Flexibility bills, contact their offices and let them now how important their signing on is to you and their other fishing and fishing dependent constituents.

As President Obama indicated so clearly last night, it's all about jobs, and to a large extent that's what this campaign is all about. But it's also about people having the freedom to fish and fisheries managers having the freedom to manage without the overly restrictive controls that have been bought and paid for by the so-called fisheries conservationists.

Palm Beach Inlet Info Needed

Might be headed down to West Palm Beach next week,no room for the yak this trip:pinch:but I would like to access Palm Beach Inlet from the North Side {Singer Island},but access looks limited to a LONG WALK down from the Public Beach.

I`ve never been in this area,but have been checking it out on Google Earth before I go,so any help with this Jetty Area,or any other Spots I should try while I`m down that way,would be a big plus for a Newbee that far South :D

www.chumbob.com thats the website..last weekend i went out to the north bridge brought along a couple of these bad boys and filled them with oysters..holy shit did i catch a bunch of sheepshead around the bridge..i put the chum bob bout 16inches in front of my bait and it worked great..chummed the spot right were my bait is everytime..i also went out to riverbreeze to a hole and put dead shrimp in it this time and caught 13 Black drum all in 1 hour..they were all eating size..my cousin tried for crappie fishing he put dry catfood in it and he said he slayed em..i know they would good for catfishing fill em with liver the cat fish will go nuts..but check it out i think it works great. its kinda like cheating lol:D

3rd Annual Lakeland Fish/Dive Expo

Well, the Lakeland Fish and Dive Expo is returning for its 3rd year to Off the Wall Adventures (2055 Shepherd Rd. Lakeland, FL 33811) on Saturday, February 6, 2010. This year we have an even bigger lineup than last year, as well as some different booth vendors. Like last year, we will be selling hamburgers, hot dogs and sodas, with ALL proceeds going to CCA (Coastal Conservation Association). We will also be selling chicken wings courtesy of Pinch-a-Penny Pools/Spas and their Big Green Egg Cookers, again with proceeds going to CCA. CCA-Polk will be on site to sign up any potential new members and also handle some of our raffles that will be going on, which will also benefit CCA. The 2009 Hell’s Bay Waterman that is being raffled off by CCA will be on display and raffle tickets for the skiff are $25 each. This is family friendly atmosphere designed to bring outdoor enthusiasts together and have a great time. Start time will be 8:30 am. The first seminar will begin at 9:00 am. Seminars will last approximately 50 minutes. The last seminar is scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm. The expo will last until 5:30 pm. I am curious as to why I see 99% of yall fishing with spinning gear. I grew up on baitcasters and spinning gear was always considered the beginner rig. Anyone out there care to explain. I have a few spinning rigs that I use from time to time mostly when the wind on the Texas coast is whipping pretty good. Whats yalls reason?

Golden Trout in New England?

I caught what I identified as a golden trout in the Mass/Connecticut area. This is strange because as far as I know there have been no introductions in the area and the species is indigenous to California. If you have any thoughts about this strange occurrence let me know.

CCA COMMENTS AND TESTIMONY ON AMENDMENT 17A TO THE SOUTH ATLANTIC FISHERIES MANAGEMENT COUNCIL SNAPPER GROUPER FISHERY MANAGEMENT PLAN.

Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this contentious and unprecedented issue.

We recognize that the members of the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council have been put in an almost impossible position. This is a fisheries disaster that is 40 years in the making, and yet this Council has been tasked with fixing it in just two years. The federal government has conducted exactly one full, modern stock assessment on South Atlantic red snapper, leaving this Council with few options to find a way out of this unprecedented mess, and no one is happy with any of the options currently before us. That is unfair to the members of this Council, to the fishery and to the angling public. Seldom if ever have we seen a more neglected fishery than South Atlantic red snapper. As CCA’s general counsel said recently, if a corporation was managing this fishery, we would recommend that the entire management team, and especially the CEO, be fired.

It remains CCA’s position that the current red snapper stock assessment be reviewed again by a panel of stock assessment experts. We are well aware the assessment has been peer reviewed through the SEDAR process and judged to be the best available science, and that the Council's SSC has concurred in that finding. However, in this special instance where the potential economic ramifications are so severe, we believe there must be another review of the assessment to make sure we are indeed using the best available science.

If further review indicates less stringent management measures could be implemented to end overfishing and meet the rebuilding target, that would be a simple matter within the current amendment process and would help ameliorate some of the impacts being encountered by anglers in this fishery.

We would like to draw special attention to the mention of the need for fishery independent surveys in this fishery. CCA views fishery independent data as critical to the establishment of a better assessment process that is not solely dependent on recreational and commercial catch for data. CCA commends the Council for identifying the need for such surveys in the future. We encourage the adoption of such survey methods as quickly as possible.

In closing, CCA is fully aware of the tenets of the Magnuson Act that are forcing this issue, yet we do not believe that closing down fishery after fishery for recreational anglers was what Congress had in mind when it reauthorized the Magnuson-Stevens Act in 2006. Large-scale closures should always be the last option explored by fisheries managers, not the first.

With that in mind, CCA at this time is not able to come to a consensus to give its support to any of the alternatives before this Council. We support ending overfishing and rebuilding this stock, but urge the Council to continue searching for an alternative that avoids closures.

HOUSTON, TX – Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) has filed a lawsuit in federal district court in Fort Myers, Florida, challenging the adoption and implementation of Amendment 29 to the Gulf of Mexico Reef Fish Management Plan approved by United States Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke on August 30. Amendment 29 gives away a majority share of Gulf grouper to the commercial fishing industry through a catch share program.

“CCA has stated from the beginning that this management action is fundamentally flawed,” said Chester Brewer, chairman of the CCA National Government Relations Committee. “In moving forward with Amendment 29, the federal government has disregarded multiple provisions in the Magnuson Stevens Act designed to govern the impacts of such action on other participants in the fishery. The only ones considered in this amendment are the commercial fishermen.”

Catch share systems bestow a percentage of a public fishery resource to a select group of commercial fishermen, based on their catch history, to harvest for their own personal gain. The commercial entities pay nothing back to the public for the permanent property right to harvest a public resource, but catch share systems are nonetheless being emphasized in federal fisheries as a way to reduce overcapacity and improve economic efficiency in the commercial sector. CCA has contended that in fisheries where there is a large and growing recreational sector, exclusive fishing rights proposals maximize benefits to the commercial fishing industry while ignoring the participation and beneficial economic impacts of recreational fishing.

“In more than 30 years of practice in fisheries law, I have not seen a more arbitrary action than this one,” said Robert G. Hayes, CCA general counsel. CCA has asked for an expedited hearing and expects the government to answer the lawsuit within the next 60 days. “We are going to proceed as quickly as the court will allow to prevent the implementation of this egregious decision.”

Fishind in Cancun without a guide

I'm going to Cancun in January and have booked a couple of charters. The resort (Moom Palace) also supplys Kayaks to the guests. I asked the activity director where I could fish without a guide and he told me that It was illegal to fish in Cancun without a guide. Has any one else heard of this or am I being scamed??

Getting started - Rods, Reels & Tackle for teenage Grandsons

Blair,

My grandsons and I enjoy Addictive Fishing very much.

My background is mostly fishing for large mouth bass although I grew up near the Laguna Madre in South Texas where I did some fishing for trout and reds back in the late '60's.

I live in Jacksonville, FL. My five grandsons, ages 13 through 19, and I have an interest in inshore fishing with artificials for reds, trout, flounder, snook and sheepshead. I would like to help set them up with rods, reels and tackle without breaking my limited bank account. We have a couple of Dick's Sporting Goods stores in Jax where I do most of my shopping for fishing gear.

My grandsons and I prefer spinning equipment over bait casting. In your opinion what's my best bang for my buck for a rod (length, action, lure weight and line size) and reel (line capacity)? What size line would you recommend (braid and mono) and what size leader for all round fishing conditions in the Jacksonville area? Also, what bait casting rod and reel would you prefer for all around fishing?

What would be your top five "go to baits" and 3-5 colors do you prefer?

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up about the AF Zone at Dick's Sporting Goods. We have had many people contact us looking for our products in other states. The AF Zone is NOT in all DSG stores. All 11 Florida stores have the endcap and soon the D'Iberville, MS store will be added. Trout trouble?!?!?!?!

I was fishin a couple of nights ago from a dock w/ lights and there was tons of activity w/ baitfish and trout popin' everywhere. I used lots of diffrent lures; 3 diff. types of GLUP! and a DOA and a plan grub w/ a lead head. I only got one bite and i didn't hook him because it bite the tail and not the hook. What will catch these trout? lure suggestions and presentation.... thanks

ps-there are about 12-17 in. with bigger gators :)
