It was to windy I drifted the flat once and it was a wash so my daughter and I loaded up and went to beacon 42 ramp at Mosquito lagoon. We covered a lot of water for a couple of ours when all the sudden Fish On!
This is a 25" Gator Trout. A little later we were drifting the same flat before we left and it was Fish On once again!![img][/img]

The date on the pic is not correct this is my daughters camera!
Shameless plugging....

Well... Garry has been going out to his "secret spot" all this past week, and leaving with 5 or 6 fish with every couple hour visit. So to prove that I am NOT unlucky, I decided to go out with him and sport my new shirt I got (also our new sticker!).

We tried his first spot with no luck. We moved to his next spot and I ended up with 3 reds!!

And Garry caught one.... which was the biggest at 30''.

We caught all the fish within about 30 minutes. We decided to take a little drive and head up to patillo creek for a little while. We found some need little back creeks and things, but only made out with one sweet trout (that I caught :D).

Was a great day!!! We drifted probably a combination of 80 pins, mohara, and greenies, without a single hit until the outgoing Friday night when i landed a jack. After that the blues and ladies moved in with average size of 3lbs. After we blew through 3 dozen shrimp with the ladies/blues we decided to takeoff. After 24 hours of fishing with no sleep we were tired and the flying ants and noseeums were just too much. I've never seen the inlet that slow, and I doubt we'll go back until snook season closes. All fishing was done off of the North Jetty.

Mosquito Lagoon report 5/8

<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Space Coast Fishing Report from Capt. Tuck had only three or four decent shots all morning, and we didn’t score a fish. Tough day.

Monday I fished Dr. Charlie and his 11 year old son, Harry. Again, the weather was pretty nice, and again it was a tough day. Only a couple small trout were boated to show for a day’s poling and casting. We tried a variety of lures, and saw reasonable numbers of fish, but couldn’t score a strike. Harry was very well behaved, especially considering how slow the fishing was. At the last stop, at the last minute, Harry got a 26 inch red that ate a chunk of mullet soaked on the bottom. One is so many more than none.

Tuesday California flycaster Sid Wales and his bride Heather joined me for a day on the lagoon. It took a couple of hours but we found a lot of redfish, and Sid ended up hooking five and boating four, all in the slot. The fly of choice was a #4 olive colored Borski Slider. Sid was one of the best fly casters I’ve had on the boat in a while, which certainly helped. The weather helped too, light winds and clear blue sky, perfect sight fishing conditions.

Yesterday Bud Frank and Ken Hare joined me on the lagoon. The plan was a ¾ day, tossing spinning lures. I was anticipating a good day, since I had found so many fish the previous day. They were all gone, moved to I couldn’t find where. We tried a variety of locations, habitats, and baits. We’d only see a few fish at each stop, and managed only two dink trout. Finally we soaked mullet for 15 minutes in one of my favorite mullet soaking holes. No bites. I poled through it as we were leaving and there were at least a half dozen reds in it. Very rare for a red not to suck up a nice juicy pork chop. That’s fishing, I guess.

Life is short- GO FISHING!!!

Life is great and I love my work!

Call me now to reserve your fishing adventure! 407.977.5207

John Kumiski

www.johnkumiski.com

www.spottedtail.com

Redfish and Bass Tournaments in central Fl

Can anyone give me some info on any local tournaments in the local area of central Fl for redfish and Bass, Im currently offshore in the gulf of mexico and have been out of the loop on the schedules, I will be back in mid May and Im looking for some tournament even bennifit tournaments thanks everyone...... Our motor it still on the fritz... And my uncle turned 60 on Wednesday and ask me for fresh redfish for his birthday. Well we couldn't let him down so Garry went out with Capt. Will to the Goon on Saturday morning so he could bring him one fresh out of the water to his party we had for him at my mom's. They said the bite was slow but Will managed a nice one to keep.

Here is Happy Uncle Joe

While they were out in the flat they found this poor little guy struggling to stay alive after being hit by a prop. They didn't want to put him on the boat... there's some law about putting molested fish on your boat or something like that... But it's pretty sad. That is what happens when a*holes like to plow through the flats....

Well after partying all day Saturday, we woke up early this morning to head out to PSJ so I could try and catch a snook. We fished the docks and landed a total of 6 fish for the day. It was windier than expected when we arrived at 7AM. We fished the shoreline west of Flamingo and after some time at Little Palm Island headed to my favorite place ...Jimmy's Lake looking for cleaner water. Caught 3 nice reds there. 29,25,and a 22. Dave also got 2 nice Snook. We did spook 3 HUGE snook, but had no opportunities to hook them. They were there and they were eating.Saw lots of reds all day though.

Turned glassy for a while and it was a great day of fishing. Just enough breeze in the afternoon to keep cool. So we made do and set up camp, Becca got the first fish which made me happy. She hasn't been fishing in a few years and all I wanted her to do is catch some fish, and what do you know, we found the catfish hole from hell.(I HATE CATFISH) Didn't get any pictures of her fighting fish, nor of her catch because everytime I turned around I was releasing or baiting. One the boats left that was closer to the output so we made a bee line for the spot. A few cats later, I looked over to see Bucca doubled over and the drag was screaming. She got pretty excited and regained some line, she didn't expect such a big run like that after catching cats all morning. She fought the fish like a pro....after 3 to 4 minutes of tug-o-war the line went slack...the hook came unglued.:crying: The Black Drum have been thick in the area for a few weeks now and how that fish was fighting, it very well may have been a nice Black. She was very happy with the fight but she damn sure wanted that fish...I don't blame her.

We headed to the mangroves after that heart breaker in hopes of some Reds or Snook....

One Jack later with no signs of Reds we headed to Rinker Canal looking for some Trout.

No Trout, just crap load of Manatees. We had large wake follow a DOA Cal for about 10 to 15 feet and that was it.

It was getting late and we knew we had to call it a day and get back to real life being Mommy and Daddy, but we had one last bit of excitement in Rinker. Like I said there were Manatees everywhere....They had no fear of the boat (that always worries me) and they came right up to the boat, I mean inches. They followed us around for 20 minutes or so, so we stopped and snapped a few shots.

We had a great day and have decided, we need a Becca and Austin day more often instead of always being known as Mommy and Daddy.

urban snookin

alright guys let me start this off by saying there were three people on the boat all of which got north biscayne bay slams and one who got a grand slam. the species were

1 tarpon

6 snook

5 trout (i think)

2 magrove snapp's

here are the pics

thats the poon

nice snook

another big dock light snook

all these were relativly late in the night especially the tarpon. we had an encounter with a drunk ladie offering up drinks at 3 in the morning standing at the edge of her dock we all thought she was gonig in. me an the boys enjoyed a nice exchange of words and we were off.

Lurking the docks at JBs..

Garry fished a tournament a friend of ours held Saturday. Cracker11 was already out there so we had a good idea where the fish might be, so we headed towards grassy point to start our drift.

Like I said we were in my new boat and I wasn't 100% sure of what she would draft, I found out real soon I missed the 4 inches the johnny sat in. The new boat with 2 people on board was drafting 9"-10" at rest and 6"-8" under way. Once we figured out how deep we needed to be it was on.

Gator30 showed me up and landed the first fish on MY BOAT, I wasn't thrilled but we had a fish on board so no big deal. Jerry got a nice big Gator Trout, 25" and 4 1/2 lbs.

Now it was my turn, I hoped. Roughly a half hour later...fish on, it was a nice red. It took some drag and then made a run at the boat and as soon as it saw the boat, zoom gone again. After getting untangled from under the motor, (not used to having a big a$$ motor to get tangled in) we had another nice fish in the boat. The red measured in at 24" and was 5 lbs.

Gotta remember to turn the visor around next time for the picture, kinda funny looking.

It was a great day to be on the water yesterday, nice and calm in the early parts of the day and a lite chop as the day burned on. I'm very pleased with the new boat, but it will take some time getting used to....big jump from a 12' jon boat with a 5 hp to a 16' flats/bay boat with a 60 hp on the back. Let me tell ya, it was nice with the little chop on the IRL in a bigger boat. Cracker11 packed up an hour and half before us due to the chop. After one day I was sick of being home (the weather was perfect) so I returned to the days of my youth, taped a fly rod to the bicycle crossbar, and peddled to the Econlockhatchee River to fish for sunfish.

There weren’t a lot of sunfish there. Usually as you walk the banks you can see a lot of them. I got six or eight, all redbreasts. One was the biggest redbreast I’ve ever caught. But I didn’t get a stumpknocker, nor a bluegill. Kinda weird.

I saw a half dozen alligators, many Plecostamuses, and had a school of a dozen or so largemouth bass swim by me. I didn’t try for the gators or the Plecos, and the bass ignored my little bluegill fly. It was a lovely, thoroughly enjoyable excursion.

I got my truck back Thursday afternoon. Friday friend and neighbor Karl Dienst and I went kayak fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon. Karl got a black drum on his first cast of the day. Then I got one. Then he got a nice trout. Then I got one. We had about 45 minutes of fast and furious action, and then it died to nothing. I was home by <st1:time Minute="0" Hour="12">noon</st1:time> time.

Sunday Dr. Mark Whittington, a fly caster from the UK, joined me for a day on the Mosquito Lagoon. The weather could not have been any nicer. I saw more redfish then I’d seen in a single day in at least five years. They were everyplace we looked, and lots of them. I do not exaggerate when I say we saw well over 1000 redfish, and a few trout and black drum too.

Catching them was a different story. As soon as Mark started waving that rod, the fish would panic and flee. The scene played out over and over again. He did get some good shots in, and got one red on a slider. It was both amazing and frustrating and tough all at the same time. To see thousands and only get one…

Monday I had a split half day. The morning angler was Jeff Christensen, from Oshkosh, Wisconsin. As we idled down the Haulover Canal I saw some fish rolling that looked like baby tarpon. I shut off the boat and handed Jeff a rod. They were big ladyfish, a treat for a guy from Wisconsin. I gave him the ultralight with a CAL jig on it, and he got four ladies before the action died down. He had a blast!

It was quite windy, 15 plus, and all those redfish I had seen the day before were now hiding. We did find some, but the only bite he got was from a three pound plus trout that whacked a jerk bait. <st1:time Minute="0" Hour="12">Noon</st1:time> came too quickly, and I dropped off Jeff and picked up Steve Butcher, from Connecticut.

The wind was now at a steady 20 with gusts. Steve tried fly fishing at first, as we hid against the west bank of the lagoon trying to stay in the lee. Although we saw a few fish, a real shot was not forthcoming. Steve switched to a spin rod.

I poled the shorelines of a couple islands and saw nothing. It was getting late so I staked out by a hole in the lee of an island and we tossed a couple of mullet chunks out. Although catfish found some of them, we did manage to get (and release) an in-the-slot redfish. After the previous day it seemed like slim pickings. Best hours are between 5pm to sundown but they have been hitting threw the night..(if you can survive the mosquitoes:crazy:  ) here are a few big ones I've caught in the past month.:D

Pic of the boat finally finished

Any one care to comment?

Capt. Several months back at one of the bridges I saw three fish someone left to die on shore that appeared to be bonefish. After searching I saw some reports where some have been caught in the area. These reports were several years old but since then the river conditions are better. Anyone know anything about this?

A Great Day in the Big Bend!!!

My buddy Jeff and I have been trying to get up to the big bend to do some fishing in his home waters. Well last weekend it finally happened that we could both go and the tides were right.
We arrived to find the air temps a bit cooler then what we left in tampa. Thats ok I always carry a jacket with me so we headed out.

Soon we found some wakes pushing and I was the first to hook up using a topwater. Landed this lil red.

We moved on after a few more fish and quickly realized the outside areas were not where we wanted to be as waves were washing over our boats. On the way back in Jeff was having trouble hooking up as he missed multiple strikes from a single fish. Well after the 5th time he missed a strike I decided to help him out and cast my lure right into the area of the last strike and was quickly on a fish that took me for a good ride. This fish is bigger then it appears since it is turned a bad angle to the camera.

Jeff did finally manage to get some hooks into a fish and brought it in for a quick photo.

Not to be out done I was able to quickly catch yet another red.

We moved to a new area and in order to make fishing easier on us we anchored the boats and got out for a walk. This was the right thing to do as we got on the fish and just slayed em. This picture is one of the 7 double hookups we had that we were both able to land the fish. We had another 15 where one of us lost the fish on the way in.

Along with the reds the trout also turned on nicely!

Jeff after losing a trophy trout ended up landing a nice one.

I had a ton of fun heckling Jeff as I whooped his butt in his home waters. I think at one point I was out fishing him 2-1. He did make a late push trying to make it even but I did not allow it. Truly was a great day on the water. I think in the end over 50 reds were caught along with trout and many good lost fish.

Space coast fishing

Headin' to Cocoa Beach this weekend. The tarpon will only be getting better in the coming months. :):)
Dave is planning a "Bonefish Challenge" Tournament this summer. It will be run out of Dons Bait and Tackle. I will post info when they are ready. Small, affordable, friendly tournament.

Also fishing Flamingo whenever possible. Planning a spot tournament this summer too. "There are not enough tournaments here in Homestead," he said. These will be small with the entry fees being used for prize money, and a donation to Everglades national Park. Haven't been out there since last year but nothings changed. Seen plenty of bait and plenty of action. and there was a some nice currents flowing from all the creek mouths.. We started about halfway to the trestles and just let the northerly winds pretty much do the work for drifting. It didn't take long before we were on fish.. there were some nice jack all through there, I've never seen them that thick in there.. We drifted all the way to the trestles and within that hour and a half we had around 20 jacks in the boat and one nice trout.. Not bad for under 2 hours.. Gold spoons and top water plugs accounted for all the fish.. There were also some bigger predators lurking on the sand bars which looked to be some nice reds but we never could get one, You couldn't get anything past all the jacks.. But thats all right :D Sorry no pics was to busy catching all them jacks.. Even though the conditions were prime, It was quite a slow day that day leaving lots of time for chit chat. One of the subjects that came up was fishing TV shows. We ended up going through the popular saltwater fishing shows that was on the air and we both agree that Saltwater Experience with Captain Tom Rowland and Captain Rich Tudor has got to be one of the best if not the best show out there.
Our common passion besides fishing is photography. The cinematography on SWE at times is truly amazing. We both joked, “Man if I could just be on the set and just take pictures of that stuff that would be awesome!”

2 weeks goes by and I get an email from Tom Rowland… I’m thinking April fools? Sure enough, it’s Tom telling me he likes my work and would I like to come down and take pictures of shoot. Like a kid opening a Christmas present and midnight, I quickly reply “That would be awesome! What When Where how!!!”.
The next day I called David up all excited and he said he got the same thing. What are the odds of this happening? Tom asked me to call him to get the ball rolling. We talked about the details and he asked if we both wanted to come down in a couple weeks for the sponsor party. Ummm let me think..…..OK!

The day came David and I made the drive over to Duck Key. Tom had us staying at the Hawks Cay, a four star resort and marina. Even though there were renovation construction going on, the place was quite impressive. We checked in and got to our room to unload our gear and were quite surprise. The room was more like a condo with 2 bed rooms, 3 bath, kitchen, living room, dining room, 3 TV, washer dryer, private patio with a hot tub sitting on the water. “Do we have to back? Home”

We met Tom, Rich and their guest for dinner at the hotel restaurant later that night. The food was just fantastic and the people we met were even better. They discuss the shows and what they were going to do in the morning. I tell you these guys were non-demanding, easy to talk to, very accommodating, no egos, and professional all the way.
In the morning we took pictures of the captains and the camera crew setting things up. We raided the on marina store for our foods and drinks for the day. Today we were going sail fishing.
Captain Scott Walker is the man! Scott was charismatic, confident, without a doubt knows how to fish. They fished out of a 36 foot Yellowfin with triple 300 Mercury Verados. They sight fish tailing sailfish in 20-60 of water, like we do redfish, truly amazing. The day was long but very exciting going 4 out of 7.

The next fishing day the sponsors were coming to town. David and I met representatives from Sufix, Hawks Cay, Yellowfin, Basspro, Lowrance and many more. David went with Tom and I went with Rich, both 24’ Yellowfin bay with 275-300hp Mercury Verado. Many others were going offshore with Scott.

We make a run Rich got us on a hot Tarpon bite. We had about 10 bites and got some great jumping shots. There were goliath landed, tarpon, big sharks, and our 100lb tarpon even got chased by a 12’ Hammer head. The fishing was great even with the slow moving tide we had that day. We headed in about 1pm. We pull up to the dock Hawks Cay had and amazing lunch spread of baby back ribs, chicken breast and grilled mahi.

2 pm the second round of fishing starts. On Rich’s boat with me this time was Jose and Kevin from Guideline eyegear. Rich ask what they wanted to do and Kevin wanted to catch a Permit. I’m thinking to myself, perhaps on a wreck but no way on a bay boat, trolling motor, mid day, barely any tide like this.

I tell you, if Rich was a betting man I would be a little poorer today. Rich used the trolling motor on a deep flat and Kevin, on the second cast, landed a 12-15lb permit tailing. Wow, eye opening. I joking say, let’s go for the grand slam. Rich says sure we can leave these permit and do that. Kevin agree, even though he was an avid fishermen has never achieved the grand slam.

We make the run for the bone fish but Rich made a U-Turn and said, let’s get a tarpon real quick. 5minutes later we on a flat loaded with 15-20lb Tarpon laid up. He again trolling motor up to them, power poled down and started to work them. It wasn’t long Kevin was hooked up and Rich also was hooked with double Tarpon. We landed the double tarpon and took some pictures. We decided to leave the 60-80 laid up tarpon alone to look for the bone fish. At this point I’m shaking my head.

Rich motors to flat puts the trolling motor down and started to tell Kevin what to look for. He was rudely interrupted but pods of 100+lb tarpon going coming from all directions in this 4-6 foot flat. Yes just like the DVD “Chasing Silver”. We had 2 eats that stole the crab but they were not very aggressive. We left the hundreds 100lb+ tarpon in 4-6’ of water alone to find our bone fish before we lose the light.

Why don’t I just end the story now? Yes you guessed it, Rich trolling motor his 24’ Yellowfin up on a flat found a bonefish to complete Kevin’s 1st grand slam in 3 hours. After the bonefish was hooked, I turned around to Rich “Ok, You are Da Man!”, giving props where it was due.

The party that night was just first class. Hawk’s Cay didn’t hold anything back. On the spread was steaks, lobster, steamed Hog Snapper, clam bake, ceviche and an open top shelf bar. “Do we really have to go back home?” And Yes I probably put on a couple pounds. No not probably, absolutely.

We ended the night with lots of handshakes and exchange of business cards. Tom and Rich put on an excellent event, holding nothing back just as they do their TV show, Saltwater Experience. They asked us if we wanted to come back again in the summer. David and I said yes before they even finish the sentence.
On the drive back to reality we absorbed our experience these past days. The people we’ve met, the things we got to see. We both agree it was the best fishing trip we’ve ever had without even wetting a line, a real saltwater experience.

Party Boat Trip 4/10/2008

The kid and I got to go out on the Hubbards 12 hour trip Thursday aboard the Friendly Fisherman. It was a blast to go out on the big boat to deep water. The water temp was good at 72 and the wind was out of the southeast around 12 mph. We made a long ride out to 140 feet and started our day. Capt. Chris had a wreck he wanted to try. Well he was right on it. AJ after AJ came over the side with 10 or so going in the box. I got the big fish at 27 pounds. StowawayBoy got a nice one to. The bait for the AJs was pinfish so everyone around me shared my pin's if they did not have any. After the bite turned off we headed to some spots looking for grouper and snapper. The bait then turned to cut bait. Tons of grouper red and gagg came over the side. The snapper bite was good to with many ARS and mango snapper being caught. Capt. Chris did a great job finding fish all day and not sitting to long if the bite was slow. All in all StowawayBoy and my self got a big AJ and a nice red grouper to take home. What is good about Hubbards is the wreck fishing then they also got some good grouper #s too. I made a clip for you see on blip TV so check it out.:)

http://blip.tv/file/819687

Space Coast report 4/15

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Space Coast Fishing Report from Capt. Dr. Matt Genovese and his father spent the day on the Mitzi in the Mosquito Lagoon, blowing from one spot to the next. I realized that day that I need to get a Power Pole. I didn’t want to admit it, but there is no longer any getting around it.

We found a few fish. Matt got a beautiful trout, four pounds or so, on a silver Johnson Minnow. Then Dad hooked a nice red on an identical bait. I stopped the boat while he fought it, and sadly the hook pulled out. They got four more hits on the spoons, and missed three. Just before quitting time Matt got a slot red, which ended a tough day on an up note. They were great guys to have in the boat, very interesting to talk to. Dad is the guy who invented the Liquid Crystal Display! Now I need to fish the guy who invents a cranial chip that will let me remember people’s names.

Thursday Michael Stanton and his twelve year old son Michael Stanton spent a half day with me on the Mitzi on the Indian River Lagoon. I had gotten a hot tip that there were big ladyfish on the surface, feeding under birds, off of Kennedy Point. The perfect thing for a twelve year old! I ran down there to check it out. We found a few fish and birds around the sunken islands. It was very sporadic and very short lived. We tried to fish beneath the birds but they were moving fast and we didn’t get a bite. After poling and looking for redfish a while I found a small school of fatties. Even chunking them we didn’t get a bite. Michael did get several quality puffers though, and we had fun watching them blow up like balloons.

Resuming the hunt, we found a flat with beautiful, clear water and decent numbers of both trout and reds. Michael got a red on a chunk, the only one we got before running out of time.

Friday was the nicest day in weeks, bright sun, very few clouds, and almost no wind. I was expecting great things. Jeff Guernin and his father, George, joined me on the Indian River Lagoon. The first spot we checked had more boats than fish, and we quickly left. The second spot was loaded with big trout. George hooked and lost one on a jerk bait, and then Jeff hooked and lost one on a chunk. Then George became ill and we had to go in. I felt bad for him. George, I want to see you again when you’re feeling better!

Friday night I attended the Orlando CCA Barbeque. Again the weather was beautiful, and you know what that means on a Saturday! We tried a couple spots in the Mosquito Lagoon and found almost nothing. So we decided to go to where the trout had been the day before. When we got there it was after <st1:time Hour="10" Minute="0">10 AM</st1:time> and there were four boats in there. All but one left as we idled in. Need I say the fish weren’t there?

We went back to the Mosquito Lagoon under a freshening wind. We found a flat that was just covered up with (very nervous) redfish. We had quite a few shots, and lots of refusals and flushed fish. Mark had a strike on a black Bunny Booger. Mark is a trout fisherman and raised the rod tip instead of strip striking. He missed the fish. That turned out to be the only strike we got in spite of being in the fish for about three hours.

Sunday the forecast was for cold, overcast, and a hard north wind, with a 30 percent chance of rain. Ray Kaatz, a fly fisher from Illinois, joined me on the Mosquito Lagoon. The weather was exactly as predicted. We were pretty much relegated to searching on lee shorelines, both to stay out of the wind, and because that was the only place we might actually see a fish before running it over. We started up in the pole troll area and ended up down in Eddy Creek, hunting all day long. We did have a few shots and Ray got a small red on a black Bunny Booger (BBB). The rain started just in time to make the long, windy ride back a long, windy, miserably cold and wet ride back. We’re manly men, we made it OK.

Monday Ray was out with me again. It was cool but the sun was out and so were the fish. Ray hooked and lost a red right away, and then got one in the slot, again on the BBB. We worked over the same area diligently, and the fish responded by vacating. So we changed spots.

The second spot we tried (and we stayed there the rest of the day) was full of tailing fish. They weren’t little mamby-pamby tailers, either- when they ate something you could hear the splash from 150 feet away. They were working in singles and small groups, wallowing around like pigs. It was without a doubt the best tailing action I’ve seen in the ML in 10 years or so.

Now, that having been said, it doesn’t mean they were easy. If I stayed on the poling tower we couldn’t get a shot. I had to pole the boat from the stern deck (and that poling tower is very in the way if you’re not standing on it), getting upwind of the fish and drifting down on them until we were in Ray’s casting range. Then I’d stake out the boat and let him have at it. He picked up two nice slot fish this way, both on an olive colored Slider.

The wind kept freshening and the clouds started rolling in. The last hour was a wash. We just kept blowing out fish we couldn’t see. We decided to bag it a <st1:time Hour="16" Minute="0">4 PM</st1:time>.

I broke down and started a blog.
