That's about how bad it is.
I want to pass this along. IF, you are out fishing, and, someone gets hit by a ray, STOP FISHING, get the boat up on the trailer, and go directly to the Emergency Room! Time is everything! If it's a really bad sting, don't waste any frickin' time and call 911!!! I mean that too!

RE: I Got Stung By A Stingray

Years back me and my dad pulled up to Parish park to go fishing to find a guy and his buddy with a giant hole all the way through his foot, effing crazy! I've been changing the dressing everyday and it's getting better but it's taking a lot longer than I thought it would. Yesterday, I put on a large band aid just to get some air to it. Later, I ended up hitting my left hand on something on my workbench and broke it open a little. Yeah, me bad. Anyway, I wanted to say you were right about trying to forget about it. I am glad that the sting is located on the bottom of my hand and out of sight. Last night on the local news they reported that a kid got barely scraped by a stingray on his little finger but never needed medical attention. Hmmm. Where were these reporters a week ago? I would have given them an ear full! lol Later...

RE: I Got Stung By A Stingray

I can fully understand not wanting to remember such an event,or even not wanting to see the Pic`s,and I know most folks{leaving room for Tourist}don`t intend to Molester Em:P...I guess it`s just one of those freak things, where you can do everything right, let it slip your mind One Second, and it`s done:w00t:...Kinda like Lightning Bolts, chances of getting hit go up if you walk around outside :P

Cook, the Pic of your Harpooning slowed my wadding pace down to a crawl, the Hoss-Rays around here are better at digging-in than the little guy`s,and have No Fear:crazy:......Man-Hole Covers

The Pics to me,are like a big WAKE UP slap to the back of the head ;)

Paul won`t take pictures of it anyway :P I think he`s trying to forget also :D

RE: I Got Stung By A Stingray

Ya know what I always say... no pictures, it never really happened. :hehe:

RE: I Got Stung By A Stingray

As a kid,I always thought it would be more like a Bee-Sting.......Until I seen a guy step on one to get his hook back........OMG :w00t:....A grown man screaming like that was enough to make ya sick, but when I seen that shaft stuck clean through his thigh......I had to sit down

I don`t fear them, but I do give them plenty of room now ;)

I think more folks should show thier Damage Pics, because Sting-Ray so Understates thier power ;)

RE: I Got Stung By A Stingray

5 sticks with the first needle and 8 sticks with the second needle. I don't think I could endure 8 needles, lol! From now on I will be cutting the line now that I know first hand of the associated pain when dealing with these critters. To be honest. I should have stayed home too. It wasn't until I ran into Travis Tanner at Capt Hooks that I learned that a Red Fish Tourney was being held that day. Then we could have shot pool, drank beer, and talked TV. Around noon I hooked into a sting ray. Nothing new since you catch them all the time down here and I have released hundreds over the years of fishing. I got him up to the side of the boat, turned my head for a second to reach for the pliers and bam! He got me on my left hand. Quick as a snake bite! I yanked my hand up and he pulled free taking a huge amount of flesh with him. The pain was immediate and so was the bleeding. I told Greg to cut the lines free, throw the rods on the floor and head for the boat ramp which was only a half mile away. To make matters worse as Greg was getting the boat on the trailer his blackberry fell into the water. Now we have no phone and don't have a clue where the nearest hospital is. Now the pain is starting to reach the middle of my forearm. When we stopped for a red light I yelled out the window for directions to the ER. Thank God we were only two miles away. The pain was now up to my elbow and hurt so frickin bad that I felt like throwing up. You all ever been there? Greg dropped me off at the ER entrance and went to park the truck. As I walked into the ER three nurses looked at me and asked if I had been shot. I never noticed all the blood on my clothes. I said no...a stingray got me really bad on my hand and tried to describe the pain. They rushed me into a room and went to work on my hand. First, they had me put my hand into a large bin that had some type of solution and extremely HOT water. Believe it or not but once I adjusted to the HOT water it relieved a small portion of the pain but as the water cooled the pain came right back. One of the nurses was nice enough to refill the bin with hot water as I needed it. Another nurse walked in and asked when was the last time I had a Tetanus shot. Before I could finish saying I don't remember she injected the shot into my right arm. Another nurse walked in and asked how I was doing. I told her the pain was still really really bad. She returned a short time later with a Percocet pill, an antibiotic pill, and, cup of water. I liked her! Then the Doctor came in to assess the damage and left without saying a word. About a minute later she returned with a frickin needle that could kill an elephant. She said she had to deaden the hand so that she could open up the puncture wound to get a better view. I knew that was coming but because I was in so much pain I just told her to do it. Wrong move on my part. Ended up biting my lip. Yes, it hurt but there are no words to describe the pain. Next, in rolls an X-Ray machine with a cute little Tech telling me to hold my hand in several different positions. I asked why the X-Rays, my hand was not broken? She smiled and said we have to see if the stingray left any barbs behind. If they see any barbs stuck in there the Doctor has to dig them out. Oh. Really? No shit. Wasn't she a boat load of sunshine?!? She left and the Doctor returned and asked if the numbing needle started to work. I said no. Then I asked for another one. She looked at me like I was nuts but I was telling the truth. She went and got another needle, told me to man up, and hit me again with that thing about eight times. The Doctor said if that didn't work then they would have to knock me out, which at that time, would have been better than getting stuck by two needles. And by the way, that last needle did do the trick. The Doctor came back in and after looking over the X-Rays said no barbs were left behind and went to work. I asked her bad it was and she said that the only thing that stopped the stinger from going completely through was that it hit a hand bone. I finally looked over her shoulder to see for myself. The puncture hole was about as round as a 'dime' but about an inch deep. How many stitches am I going to get? None, we don't stitch up these wounds due to the high rate of infection. If this does get infected we're going to have to open it back up and clean it again. Oh. Really? No shit. Well, I can't walk out of here with a hole in my hand!?! Before she could answer she already had closed the hole with a 'butterfly' bandage and was almost done rapping it with gauze. I think the Percocet was starting to work due to the fact that the pain was subsiding in my arm and now I couldn't feel my hand at all. I was free to go and left that ER was a little happier than when I arrived. If anyone reading this and has experienced the pain from a stingray sting please let me know. If anyone wants to know what that type of pain feels like, just ask me. It's very unique and I have never felt anything like it in my life. End of story. One more thing, please be careful around these animals. I wouldn't wish this pain on my worst enemy. And I'm not kidding either!
