I rarely post on a hunting subject since I would rather shoot with my old Nikon FM with a Century zoom lens when I had it,got stolen years ago along with a lot of fishing tackle,oh well. Had a nice motor drive on it for "rapid fire" surf and jumping sailfish/marlin/tarpon shots.:D

I have boated my entire life and haven't hunted much at all but I was allowed to tag along on a couple of excursions in the Big Cypress Swamp and we carried the boat's weapons to fire them and stay profecient. The popular weapon for the boats by far is a Ruger Mini 14 stainless and a Mossberg 12 guage shotgun with an extended magazine. In the early 80's I owned an AR 15 with a short "paratrooper" stock with numerous 20 and 30 rd mags. I also had the first generation night optics along with radar and on one yacht I ran, the owner had an assortment of what I call "80's Cuban squirt guns",a Mac 10 ,Tech 9 and an Interarm's KG 99 for close range.He also carried his favorite 30.06 deer rifle to reach out the distance with.

The only hog I ever shot was at a walking reserve and I used an old M1 carbine,back in high school. My mother's neighbor in Okeechobee uses an AK 47 for hogs and takes great pleasure dressing them at his house hanging them from a big tree and enjoying cold tall Bud's while doing it, a true man of the south he is. ;)

Just for everybodies info those are M-2 Browning .50's they are just set up in a different configuration for naval use.

The M-60 was a good weapon, but the newer M-249 is awesome, looks like a saw on steriods and fires 600-800 rmp

As far as favorites

rifle: Remington 700bdl in .308 topped with a 3x12xat least 40mm scope and the rifle needs to be fiberglass bedded

pistol: Para-ordinance 14/45ltd with 225grn sjhp's

c&c: Colt defender .45 with same ammo

shotgun: Remington 870 Super Express Mag it will cycle anything from #8 dove loads to the heaviest 3 1/2's on the market

Thats my .02 on the weapons.

As far as hunting it is hard to beat a 12 ga. with 00 buck inside of 40 yards. Except for a bow. the sense of accomplishment is just so much higher! I am trying to get a turkey this year with it, but being to poor to get on a lease the areas to hunt are slim.

My weapon of choice is the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW). With 5.56 mm rounds and a 200 round magazine capacity, it gets the job done when hunting for turkey.
It is fully automatic and costs a lot for ammo.

Despite decades of paychecks earned by outdoor writers hawking the "perfect" gun... there is no such thing. With the diverse selection of guns, calibers and ammo one can tailor his weapon/ammo choice to the game pretty well, but there are no free rides. Anything you gain from one vantage, you loose somewhere else. Fast/light vs Slow/heavy has been debated for years.

If we are talking home defense, a good quality wheel gun is the most dependable gun with rapid fire capability. Calibers can be had that anyone can handle, from .38 Special to and beyond Dirty Harry.

If we only consider hunting, then again, I would consider the game sought and an appropriate platform and ammunition choice to kill as quickly and humanely as possible.

If one wishes to shoot and enjoy the shooting sports, it will be a matter of matching the equipment to the activity. A balmy afternoon at the local range with a brick of .22 long rifle and I'm in hog heaven. "Cowboy" shoots are ver popular now. .44 Special and some of the 'old standard' calibers are great in that genre.

Sporting clays? Oh yeah! 'bout as much fun as you can have with your britches on. Decent 12's and 20's are not out of the reach of 'normal' folks with normal budgets. There are, of course, high end O/U's that cater to the 'heavy competitors'.

The catagories continue into Militaria, collecting and duty (law enforcement).

There are proponents of most anything that goes BANG! Enjoy them, respect others opinions, ALWAYS advocate safety and take any chance you have to educate rather than confront those who would totally ban guns. Remember, there are already detractors to sport fishing. As outdoor folks we need to support each other as we can.

My first turkey was killed with a 30-30, shot went across his wing and across his neck almost taking his head off. Thats the only one that I have gotten with a 30-30 the rest haver been either with a shotgun or a bow.

But I still get out afer a hog now and then so it keeps me feelin like I aint all yuppyfied yet.

I took a 100yrd shot out of a blind with a 30-30,shot placment was perfect,the Deer turned and ran 100yrds,and dropped at the foot of my blind:w00t:......Not much tracking there;) but most hit the ground where they stood:D

I tried a Turkey with the 30-30,out of the back door of the Trailer one morning......50yrds......Feather`s flew everywhere......woke up everyone in the Trailer,so I started to drink my morning Joe,and we sent one of the kid`s out into the field to get the bird..........5' from the bird,the turkey jumped up and flew away over the top of the 30' planted pine`s never to be seen again:w00t:.....Tough Bird;)

Cracker11 you are right plus the 30-30 has another vantage, it is a light weapon to carry especially if you track/stalk in the woods, plus it has plenty of knock down power, I have yet had to track down a deer that I had shot with the 30-30, it has alway drop where it was at.

Semi-Auto Shot-gun`s are Nice for Bird`s and Skeet`s,but can be a real pain in the butt ,even if you keep it spotless,it will hang up,just a matter of when. I use to use a Remington 1100 12ga for Dove a Quail,but spent more time stripping it down than hunting.

Hard to beat the 30-30 for a Spot and Stalk hunt in the thick wood`s,where most of your shot`s are under 100yrds,takes a decent sized branch to deflect you shot,unlike some rifles that have a long range,but can be deflected by a blade of grass:w00t:

Barret .50 cal sniper rifle. Man I miss that weapon, anyways when I was deer hunting I used a 30-30, 7mm, 303 british, and a sks my favorite was the Winchester 30-30 model 94 with a side mount scope 3x9x40, turkey Hunting 12 gauge 870 remington, dove and qail hunting my great grandfather old long tom 16 gauge, single shot. Killed more birds with that shotgun then with the automatic or pumps.

It`s not a case of being Mature or Imature,a Gun is just a tool,it can`t do anything by it`s self,it takes a human hand to make it work;)

Respect at ALL TIME`S is a MUST,even the Most Seasoned Hunter can loose concentration for one second,and have an accident.......Like we had over here at one of the Hunting Camp`s in Osceola County. A father took his son hunting with him,the first morning went off without a hitch,but the second morning the father was handing his son what he thought was an Empty Gun,and shot him in the Head:w00t:. Now this guy was a Hunter of MANY SEASON`S,but he let his guard down,and forgot one simple Rule........Check the Breach before handing the Gun off to someone else.......Now he Lost a Son,and has to deal with the Mental Nightmare of shooting his own Son with his own gun.......Respect at ALL TIME`S;)

I am mature, i want to protect my family, and go hunting/skeet shooting!

Nitro, if only you knew me better than this. I am not like others that get mad and commit suicide or kill people for the sake of doing that....

I understand guns are not safe, and they kill. Ive been taught as a youngn to never point a gun at someone *mussle sweeping* and to always check the chamber so there is no bullet, just incase it fires or w/e and noone gets hurt, believe me i am mature, and i only do things after ive thought about it very very thoroughly. Nitro i wish you could get it, im not violent unless i have to be, if you intend on taking my life, i WILL take yours, plain and simple as that...

Its not scary me with a gun, i already have a liscensed rifle, a .22 Longrifle, Ruger to be exact, and i only shoot at targets, like a pepsi can, then i take the can as a memmorial thing...

id go with the 12 ga. also, i love shotguns, many people well friends of mine think the spread of the bb's is pretty big, yet its about a lil bigger than your fist....

The Ole MEAT GUN..........I use to have a Mossberg 5oo 12ga Slug-Gun I use to toat around the Hunting Grounds....Heavy Beast,but will shoot a Slug straight as an arrow for 75yrds,with very little Kick;)...Change the Choke,and your ready for Turkey Season:D

I like the Mossberg because I`m Left Handed,Safty is back by the Thumb,and the Pump Release is on the Left,most other Pump Shotgun`s the Release is on the Right,witch leaves my fumlbing with the Release,taking my eye`s of the Critter I just shot,making a Second Shot almost Impossable:w00t:

If I had a choice of Rifle: Single Shot 270,Brake-away action,Short Barrel.......Very Light,Compact,almost No Kick,Good Range,plenty of Knock Down Power,easy to clean !

Mine too is a 12 guage, I have a 30 year old, remington 870 wingmaster that I have had since I was 13 y.o (christmas present from my folks ) and I traded the 28 inch barrel for a 21 inch slug barrel about 15 years ago ..I use that setup for everything !I even have shot trap with it ..and rarely miss:P..now as far as the rambo stuff...Sig Sauer P220 45 acp, Colt CAR 15 A2 heavy barrel, 1 in 9 twist , but thinking seriously about going the the new sig sauer 556 tactical entry weapon with crimson trace laser sites and surefire room entry light....Oh sorry , I forgot , this is a HUNTING question :D

Thank You Nitro,finaly someone addressed this Hunting Topic,on the Hunting board,with a Hunting Comment........Hell,I`d love to have an Abrams Tank,but I can`t use it for hunting.......Just looking for other Hunter`s around here to hook up with,just like we do with our Fishing;)

Forgot to mention my weapon of choice. If I could only have one to hunt with, it would have to be a 12ga.,semi-auto, with a 28" modified barrel. Had one in the 50s and 60s, and hunted every thing from deer to doves with it. Perfect all around gun.

i would .love to find a ar-15 cheap one of these days since i have a dozen 30 round mags for it...

also a 45/70 is on my shopping list... a friend has one and wow what a cannon to fire...

new guy i agree... there are days i miss the army and that pig... i sure dont miss the long walks with it and even less i dont miss jumping it... but initial burst of 300 rounds with 6 guns and a bunch of saws... on a night fire... that i miss... i also miss my squad leader smacking me in the back of the head when i keep firing so i dont have to carry the ammo back with me ;) shoot it or carry it... the choice was easy

The ol' PIG. I carried that thing around for a couple of years until I was lucky enough to pass her off to a new recruit. I used to snipe OPFOR with it. I miss the Army from time to time.

As for weapon of choice I have to say...my hands! :D
