Although I fly fish on occasion, I save most of that for when I am in Montana on assignment, I'd rather throw hard top water here; it's just my thing. As much as I love fishing, I love tying saltwater flies and I have about 10 guys that travel out of country who once or twice a year will have me wind 'em up a couple hundred for their trips, mostly to areas like Costa Rica and Argentina. A good number of my patterns are deer hair and I sometimes buy it dyed and I have a lot of deer hair stored from deer my father and I have taken during hunting season which I can leave natural but I also dye a bit batches of it as well. I have two main rooms that I use for work now, one is my photo room where I process all of my digital images for clients and in my bedroom I have a nice oak tying table that my father made for me by hand. Being the OCD freak that I am, I have every little thing separated to the point of if you saw it you would call me the "Rainman". All my pelts are stored in zip lock bags, by color and by animal type. Every color thread is individually stored, every hook and so on and on. Hell I probably spend more time lining my hooks up in a straight line then I do tying flies. I basically drive myself insane. Anyways. I also am a dog lover and for most of my life I have owned labs and they are actually sent through the frigid water filled canals of Shiloh Marsh to retrieve any duck that happens to be suicidal enough to be killed by flying into my shot pattern. Those are the ducks that the other ducks laugh at for being killed by such a bad shot but at least I have dogs to send for the ducks instead of having ME to send through the called water like my father did in the same Shiloh Marsh when I was just a little kid, after being somehow convinced that all good little boys swam the deep, cold water to get there daddy's ducks. To this day when I hear a whistle I immediately turn back and look for a hand direction so I know which way the duck fell. Now I told you all of that to get to the point that after my last lab died I ended up buying not just one but TWO Jack Russell’s who are wonderful dogs but I have to this day not met one that is not half crazy. I actually own a female who is the mother of the male that I also own. Pepper, the male has a fetish for eating any office supply he can find and to date has had tow operations on his intestines. One was to remove about 30, multi-colored rubber bands that he somehow found and ate in my office and the second time he had eaten two Sharpie Markers, one blue and one red. To this day it is a constant battle to keep off the floor all office type items to include but not limited to paper clips, ink pens, thumbtacks, erasers, pencils, Rolodex cards, wooden rulers and calculators. I could go on and on with that list but you get the general idea. Now the mother, Cinnamon has her own eating habits although not nearly quite as bad as the little guy, there is not a vegetable or fruited she will not eat but her favorite treat is my damn deer hair. She won't touch the rabbit, or any other mammal fur I may have. Turkey, quail and pheasant feathers are safe but if she gets an opportunity to rip into one of the deer hair zip locks she will absolutely eat till it's gone or I catch her. I have it dyed in just about every color you can imagine and she will eat it all but she is particularly fond of the red. So about once every few months the lady that cleans my house will leave my room door open, allowing Cinnamon to lie down and enjoy her deer hair snack until she runs out or I come home and find her. I can assure you that she has no problem passing on the evidence to the back yard and for days after her feast you can walk the back yard and find big piles of dog crap, a green pile here, a yellow there and huge piles of red everywhere. The metamorphosis is quite interesting as the feces itself begins to either dry up and all away or we get a good hard rain 'cause the next day you can go out there and a person who so desired (which I do not) could just walk around the back yard and pick up the hair in perfect condition, perfectly cleaned by the soaking rain. I swear to you I don't recycle it but if you ever by any of my flies I would suggest not getting them too close to the old smeller:.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Just another short story, completely truthful and accurate from me to you for your amusement.

Chris

cwaltersart@yahoo.com

www.flickr.com/photos/sweetlight

RE: Tying Flies

Things that make ya go.... I vacuum, I sweep, I mop, and no matter how hard I try to get my clippings in the waste basket, it turns up in the oddest places. Like today... I was at work and went to the bathroom. I looked down and there were green strands of wing-n-flash dangling... from the end of my... pant leg! :P

Its just like Easter grass. 6 months later and you're still finding it around the house.
