There are a few variations in the way this knot is tied. The angler can use a tube or a needle in replacement of the nail. With a little practice, this knot can be tied very quickly. Most common area for use is attaching the leader to the fly line. It can also be used to attach the fly line to the backing

Step 1. Place a nail between the fly line and leader. Wrap the leader back towards the end of your fly line about 6 times. (See illustration 1)

Step 2. Pass the end of your leader back through the loops you just made. After the leader is through, pull on both ends of the fly line and leader trying not to have the loops cross each other. Holding with fingers, remove nail.

Step 3. Moisten and snug down by pulling both ends away from each other. Clip excess line and leader close to the formed knot.

instead of the nail use a small straw (like a coffee straw) this allows you to pass the line through the straw instead of trying to work it along the out side of the nail...

RE: fly rod only day

Yep it was flyline. I do not think I lost alot so I am going to try to fish with it and see what happens. I now have to tie another leader to fly line knot though. I like putting a foot or two of something heavy and long lasting like a 40lb mono or fluro leader on the end of my fly line with a loop on it so that I can replace leader after leader easily. I have used an albright but I like the looks of a nail knot better. Can somone post a thread here about how to tie a nail knot?

RE: fly rod only day

Mark, you know how it is fishing by yourself, all the photos are of a fish on the floor of the boat and they all look the same. I do carry a 35mm waterproof camera with me but I am always trying to tag the fish, measure it, weigh it and get it back in the water in the shortest amount of time so I tend to only photo the big ones, unusual catches and the ones that made me work for the catch. I should take the camera down and just get it developed. Its always a surprise when I do get it developed because I forget about some of the ones I have taken pictures of.
DOA sorry about the flyline loss. I know $50-75 worth of line wrapped around a prop must have been a terrible sight (it was flyline right?).
2D

RE: fly rod only day

Hey Matt, just gives ya a good reason to get a S.A. I took out my latest shrimp fly (I posted a link to it then Vlap posted the photo) and started working the flats. Within 5 minutes I had a small red and not long after that I had another. It went quiet for a long time so I hit my trout hole to see if I could scare up a few small trout for fun. Same fly, 8:00am (or close to that time) I start catching trout. I end up trashing the fly and landing 6-8 small trout and a few lady fish. I called it quits and was back at the house by 10:00am.
Fun day and now I have a reason to tie more shrimp.
2D
