I tried the spinning gear first and was able to land a few trout (18" biggest one). After the sun was up a little I decided to pull out the long rod and see what I could scare up. I jumped at least on small tarpon (two jumps and that was it) and was able to land a bunch of trout. The largest was 22 inches long. I left my drag set to zero (storage position) so when I tried to get her on reel it was really weird to see line ripping off the real. I managed to get her in and release her for another day. I was using a shrimp pattern that I came up with a while back.

2D

RE: Flies

Oh yeah it is real weird goin from my 4wt to my 8. I am just sayin the heavier the weight rod... the heavier the fly you can pitch.

I can take my 8wt in the yard with no fly or leader on it and cast that thank like I was Houdini, but but a bass popper bug on there and it all goes to pot. Think about it, you could throw a mosquito fly just as easy with an 8wt as you could a 4 because the heavier the fly no matter what rod you use, the harder it is to cast.

RE: Flies

Well, I'm no expert on this but I will tell you that if you cast a 7wt then pick up a 12wt, you'll think you've picked up a tree trunk. A 5wt will not be able to cast a heave or bulky fly as easy as a 8wt. I built a 10wt and thats a pretty stout rod. If you picked up a 7 wt I think you would be able to cast it a lot longer (time wise) then what you could cast the 9 wt, its a weight thing. As for fighting a fish, the fight should be done with the lower half of the rod but if you high stick a 5wt you could break the tip. If you did the same with the 9wt your chances are better that you would still have a rod in tact. People catch 20-30 pound reds on 4-6# line on ultra light spinning gear so I guess you could look at it the same way with the lighter fly rods.

Not expert advise but its a start.

2D

RE: Flies

i see doa say that an 8weight has a lesser casting ability... how much of a difference is there between a 7, 8, or 9 weight? when it comes to casting hooking and fighting a fish?

i would like to have a 2nd rod and was thinking a 7 weight.. maybe next year a third.. that being a 12 weight for tarpon season... i have heard that the 12's are much harder to cast...

Thoughts?

RE: Flies

Everything you said 2D seems right on the money. That was going to be my next question... what kind of wire leader can I get that is still light enough to cast right with my 8wt.

RE: Flies

DOA, sounds like you need a fly tied with synthetics and epoxy hmmmm sounds like a "surf candy" to me. They can be real simple or multi colored with crystal flash and... With toothy critters like that, you'd better stick with something simple (cause your gonna loose some:ermm:) and made from synthetics. Toothy critters may require a wire bite tippet to prevent break (bite) off's. Also, those fish like fast moving plugs and flies so a quick strip should invite more strikes but you better hold on because mack's especially will hit on the run and peel ANY line you have on the deck out and keep going (even the smaller ones).

my .02 worth.
2D

RE: Flies

I am stuck with the store bought variety at this point.. I cannot tie them yet for on huge reason.... TIME. I would love to spend time on them, but ya gotta have it to spend it.

I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU TIERS OUT THERE:

I recently have got into an area packed with jacks, macks, and blues. I am sure just a simple fly with some flash would be deadly. Anyone know if any patters like this. I bet I could wrap aluminum foil on a hook and to better than other patterns out there. I caught them on a chartruese and white with red clousers but it took some coaxing.

RE: Flies

thanks dave. it works well on reds too. i just hope it hold up until i figure out how i did it. the body of it is gold flash tape and epoxy. i haven't been able to duplicate it. i'm having trouble getting the tape cut to size and shaping the epoxy. so if anyone has any tips, please share!

RE: Flies

Mark, I really like the gold one with wings, bet it would be good up at the lake for bass.

RE: Flies

NICE flies!

OK help me out here, is the file size limited to 512kb for photos? I tried to post a photo but the file size of all my photos are around 4000kb Maybe the camera takes high resolution photos in close up mode. I was able to open it in HP photo... and was able to lower the resolution but it came out grainy. Also when I attached it as an attachment, it came in as a ?link? and not an actual photo.

2D

RE: Flies

joe.. thanks for the advice.. it all happened so quick im am not really sure what i did.. but i am pretty sure i didnt do anything right...next time i will keep your advice in mind and hopefully soon that first pict of a fish on fly will be posted...

mark... very nice flys... i didnt know you tied em...

RE: Flies

nice flies guys!!!! Its better then tricking them with a store bought plug.
Vlap, I saw your post about hooking a fish but not catching it so I thought I'd put in my .02 worth. First were you pointing your rod at the water/at the fly? Remember that you set the hook with a strip strike, NOT a rod set like plug fishing. Jerking the rod will only result in a pound or less of pressure (just a guess). Strip strikes are transfered straight (pointing at the water and the fly) down the line and to the hook.

2D

RE: Flies

I have :satisfied: and still tie some for my friends. Vlap... Isn't one of the best feelings, to have one of, if not your first fly to be eaten on the flats? I love making flies and have Lefty Krey's video. I tied flies for over 2 years without any instruction and think it helped me get a better understanding of what the fish want. One of the craziest things ever to happen to me in saltwater happen..... when I tied the SUPER FLY! Took a 1/4oz red jig head, and put yellow and white buck tail with malibu flash:w00t::hehe::D then went to the Courtney Campbell for pompano. Went there with Doc's jigs and ran out, but had the SF in the box and said, "What the F--k." Dropped it 2 or 3 times before siiiiiiiiinnnnnnnngggggggg, 2 mins later saw a 100 lb tarpon jump on a 4300 penn with 8lb test!:D Lost him after the third jump, but will always remember that for the rest of my life. If anyone fishes the Tampa Bay, I have some good color schemes that most would not believe.

RE: Flies

i try but i am not too good.... but hopefully i will get better... although i didnt hook it a fish did hit the first fly i tied so that at least gives me hope

Flies

Any body else tie flies?

2D
