Yes, you can needlessly harm or exhaust snook. Yes, if you're gonna go under-gunned, target smallish fish and learn how to use the rod and drag correctly to beat them quickly. All good points above.

As for the big fish debate: a 34+-inch snook can easily empty a 3 wt. spool in a hurry, since smallish outfits tend to hold very modest backing. Individual fish fight differently, of course, but an oversized snook that follows a straight line in the other direction - and some do - is gonna take your fly line, your backing and part of your manhood. I have no interest in getting in the middle of the debate above, but anyone who denies that has never hooked a truly big linesider on a flyweight rig.

RE: i have a 3 weight i was wondering if i could use it for snook

yes.... the "Space Coast"

RE: i have a 3 weight i was wondering if i could use it for snook

east coast???

RE: i have a 3 weight i was wondering if i could use it for snook

brevard county

RE: i have a 3 weight i was wondering if i could use it for snook

i got my beginers outfit (reel, rod, backing, and fly line) for like $115 but that was like 3 years ago so i don't know if the prices have gone up or down

where do you live???

RE: i have a 3 weight i was wondering if i could use it for snook

so what about line , tippit, backing...rods reels, any brands??? under like $100

RE: i have a 3 weight i was wondering if i could use it for snook

7-8wt

RE: i have a 3 weight i was wondering if i could use it for snook

so if i wanted to flyfish for snook off the beach what type of outfit would i need to buy???

RE: i have a 3 weight i was wondering if i could use it for snook

i dont know why everybody is giving him crap they basically tire them self out swimming in the current with the fly line ive coaght them on 3 4 and 5 wt and not to mention the numerouse amount of jacks

RE: i have a 3 weight i was wondering if i could use it for snook

It would be tough to throw any sizeable saltwater fly with a 3wt. I wouldnt recommend it... especially if you are fishing a beach with some chop or wind!!! If you are fishing around the mangroves, your probably going to end up breaking your rod trying to stop any sizeable snook from taking you into the trees. Sure, you can point directly at the fish and grab the spool, but if there are any obstructions in the path the fish is running and it gets your $50 flyline rubbing up against a rough surface or worse, around a mangrove shoot, its one costly mistake. I have been fly fishing in Hells Bay for the past year or so and there have been some big snook I have hooked that I even had trouble dealing with on my 8wt.

RE: i have a 3 weight i was wondering if i could use it for snook
bonefishwhisperer (6/26/2007)
Please DONT try it...the rod is way too small...the reel that will fit on the rod wont hold enough line and backing...also it is very bad for the fish to be played to literal exhaustion ensuring it will die one way or the other...
ROFL, i WAS Just thinking about that, hahahaha, nice!

nice, vlap your correct!

RE: i have a 3 weight i was wondering if i could use it for snook

sorry buddy aint gonna happen

RE: i have a 3 weight i was wondering if i could use it for snook

Anyone else hoping shadow never makes it past junior member status?!

RE: i have a 3 weight i was wondering if i could use it for snook

I already did

RE: i have a 3 weight i was wondering if i could use it for snook

please stop shadow.. go teach lefty how to fly fish or something

RE: i have a 3 weight i was wondering if i could use it for snook

whatever bonefish, you dont have to be 60 years old, and catch 4,000,000 snook a year to know that if you use your rod right, use your drag right, use a little bit heavier tippet, fight the fish right, that your going to bring in that fish quickly. Also do you actually use your drag, are you using really light tippets, are you fishing around the bridges here where the snook are a lot bigger athan 99% of the snook than your going to catch off the beach, you would be the first person that I have heard of that has almost been spooled by a snook, unless of coarse you have like 50 yards of backing, and your hooking giant fish, I dont understand you almost getting spooled, use your drag, heavier tippet, and you wont have to worry about getting spooled, ast least by a snook.

Wed, 04 Jul 2007 09:55:48 if you actually use you drag how ts meant to be used, dont be afraid to tighten up you drag, and use 10 tippet you shouldnt have any problem.

Mon, 02 Jul 2007 10:35:43 by a snook on my 8wt...the smallest rod I have used was a 4wt for rainbow trout in a float tube and even that wouldnt throw much of a fly...you can do whatever you want but my 35yrs of flyfish that 50 yards of backing, also if you use the rod right, and you dont use a extremly light tippet you can land that fish just as fast as the guy using a 6 weight rod, then again some people dont know how to use their rods to their advatnage and the high stick, if you point the 3 weight almost directly at the fish and only use the back you'll have more than enough power to land those beach snook.

RE: i have a 3 weight i was wondering if i could use it for using a leader, and a shock tippet anyways, and if you pay attention you wont high stick your rod and break it.

Tue, 26 Jun 2007 09:37:39 snook

Hmmmmm How do I start? First off, I have a 5 wt and only consider that rod when I'm in a school of small trout(14-18) in open water. I usually use an 8wt floating line with a 20# shock/bite leader. I'm not sure where you plan on fishing but if there is structure for a snook to hide in, they will try to break you off in it. I would NEVER try a snook on a 3wt, Just a personal opinion. Snook are everything a bass wishes it could be, strong on runs/fights, bigger, stronger and have sharp gill plates that will cut through 10# mono pretty fast. I would worry about hooking up with something of size (18-36 inch snook, redfish, trout...) and breaking a rod at the the last moment (high sticking a tired fish). Personal opinion would be to keep the 3wt for the small fresh water stream trout and or pan fish.

Hope my opinion helps

Joe

RE: i have a 3 weight i was wondering if i could use it for snook

I can't imagine what some of those big snook would do to a 3weight.
