April 10, 2010 is the date. Cockroach Bay is the place. Check in time will be between 6:15-6:45 am on the 10th. We will launch shortly before 7:00 am. Check in time is at 3:00 pm. If you do not weigh in by 3:00 pm on the 10th, you will be disqualified.

Two man teams, fly gear ONLY, and catch-photo-release. Your team's two largest redfish will be measured for weigh in. The team with the most total inches with two redfish will win. There is NO minimum or maximum size for weigh in. A tournament marker will be provided on tournament day and must be visible in the photo along with the whole fish and pre-approved measuring device. Each two angler team must have at least one digital camera, with a clean memory card, on their boat. You may fish from a skiff, canoe, paddleboard, or kayak, but you MUST launch from Cockroach Bay (if weather turns out to be a safety issue, alternative launch rules MAY be implemented). You may leave your watercraft to wade, but you must stay within sight of you vessel.

ALL boats will be inspected prior to launch. ALL anglers will adhere to boating/fishing laws and respect fellow anglers whether they are fishing the RedFly or not.

Entry fee is $25 (cash) and must be paid at the ramp on tournament day. 100% payback for 1st place (60%), 2nd place(30%), and biggest fish (10%). ALSO.....there will be some prizes added to the mix this time.

beach flies

What is the best flies for the beach?

RedFly Results

Well, the 2nd RedFly was a complete success despite the lousy weather conditions. Winds were wasily 15-30 all day long. Protected water was key. Only 3 total redfish were measured in. Joe Welbourn and Tom Tylisz measured a 25.75" redfish to take second place and $195 prize. First place went to Capt. Bryon Chamberlain and Nick Angelo who found two great specimens measuring out at 29.00" and 28.75" for a total of 59.75" and a $300 first place prize. Everyone had a great time and we all got to hang and swap stories at the ramp afterward.....what a tournament should be all about! Rob Salimbene and I took an afternoon, on Sunday, to try and align our mojo for the RedFly Tournament coming up on 10/17. The water clarity was low and very few shots were had in 3 hours. The one fish we did get a cast to was this 24" snook. The snook took a shrimp pattern in about 7 inches of water. He was facing me directly. If it were not for the clear floating fly line from Monic, the fish would have never eaten the fly. Any colored line would have caused that snook to blow out. We saw a few more reds and snook but could not get an opportunity to put a cast on them.

Article on Fly Casting Lessons Made Simple!

I wanted to share a post I did on the Tips & Techniques section of this forum. Looking at my schedule for the year, I may get to do more fly only trips than my usual spinning gear trips. Well, at least that will hold true until the Kingfish spring run and the summer Tarpon chase. So, at the moment I am pretty excited about getting the long rod out and I have been spending some time at the vise tying baits. Here is a shrimp pattern I have been playing with.

Can anyone reccommend a fly fishing reel?

This year i plan to go fly fishing alot more often the reel i have is a Airflo rimfly not one im familiar with mostly hear of greys scierra snowbee and Wychwood

But I am intending to buy a new one preferably for salmon brown trout and sea trout or Game I could say but i think im a little spoiled for choice

so i was wondering if anyone could kindly reccommend me a good fly reel

Cheers

Has anyone fished the Doubtful

Has anyone fished the doubtful, very curious in what it is like for tramping, and of course, fishing!

equipment question

What do you guys look for when you walk into a fly shop. Spent the weekend fishing a Tournament in Islamorada. After 2 days of prefishing on spin, I decided that Flamingo would be the best plan seeing that bonefish were under heavy pressure from another tournament. I decided top increase my points by catching the redfish on fly. Flyfishing with an 8wt under 15-20kts on open flats that were heavily fished by other Flamingo guides and weekend warriors wasnt easy, especially when you factory in periods of limited sunlight due to spotty scattered patches of clouds. This made for real tough sight-fishing.
Prior to this tournament, I had been attempting my first bonefish on fly, throwing at some of the toughest fish to catch on fly under windy conditions as well. This made for great training and helped me improve 10fold when I targetted an easier species such as redfish. All the practice under pressure helped me greatly as I managed to hook every single redfish we saw given a backcast shot or an upwind shot.

In the 2 days I managed to hook just over 10 redfish on fly, landing 3 on fly. One of the fish was the largest redfish I had ever caught on fly. They dont get much bigger then that in Flamingo. I hooked all the fish on a fly I had tied myself, I named the "peekaboo slider". Fish went absolutely bonkers over this fly.

What a great experience. It goes to show that you can cast all day in your back yard but the real training that counts is when you are out on the water with the fly rod and force yourself to stick to it under some of the toughest conditions.

... It was a great turnout and EVERYONE had a blast. Capt. Colby Hane and Yong Choe took first place honors, weighing in two fish that scaled over 13 pounds. 2nd place went to Team "In Search of Tailwater" Capt. Rob Salimbene and yours truly. We weighed in one fish that weighed about 3.5 pounds. I caught that fish and broke off on one bigger, out of the same school, three casts later. Had that fish been brought in we still would have finished 2nd......Colby and Yong had some nice fish. I also took the spot award, as my fish had 5 spots. Third place went to Steve Gibson and Justin Hamblet with a 3 pound fish. So only 4 total reds weighed in but everyone had a good day of fishing..........you couldn't have asked for better conditions. We WILL do this again........probably in the spring........and rumor has it maybe Mosquito Lagoon!!! I managed to catch a tarpon on a fly! Not only did I catch one but I continued to catch them for about 30 min. I caught 4 of them but they were all small ones. They still count in my book. I was wandering around the mangroves and I saw a pipe connecting the marsh to the river and I decided to fish it. The river side was dead but the marsh side was full of activity so I stood at the pipe and cast a shrimp pattern into the moving water. I saw fish rolling below the murky water so I let the fly sink and after a few small twitches, BAM tarpon on! The end result was 4 landed with the largest one being about 20 inches. Now that I've got a few under my belt, I'm going after the big guys in the spring.

fly fishing

Want to start fly fishing and have never done it.
