I launched around 8 and was ready to wrap it up by 8:30 but Jeff was just getting there. I threw back a couple of keepers just so I wouldn't limit out so early. After Jeff finally paddled out there most everything was short of legal. The rain wasn't bad but we had a blast of wind that came through and lasted long enough for me to joke with Jeff about calling the Coast Guard to rescue us 50 yds from shore. We continued jerkin perch until the wind died down a bit and then we paddled back to where we started. I took 3 fish home and Jeff took 2. Released a nice over 20" fish to continue making dinks.

Kayak and shore fishing videos

This first vid is from the pond behind my apartment with a live cast-set-and fight footage with instructions (for those who need it) on how to catch pond bass. I took it out for the first time at Dummits on Sunday. Between the 5 of us we got 3 reds, 1 trout, and a catfish but it was a great time. The natural beauty I expirienced could not have occured if I wasnt in the yak. The dolphins came out and that slowed the fishing down. One dolphin didnt see me and almost hit me head on, when it was about 5 feet away from the bow I slapped the water and startled it. Went out today in Banana just north of Pineda, got a bunch of trout on topwater. There were some dolphins doing some Sea World type acrobatics nearby, I have never seen that in real life. After the topwater bite slowed i started throwing a MirrOdine. After a few casts I got what felt like a good sized trout but turned out to be a good sized catfish. I couldnt believe it, the MirrOdine catches everything. I used a disposable waterproof 35mm for the pics. I'll post them when I get them developed.

fishin off the yak

i seem to get my hands on alot of different things. gheenoe, jon boat, kayaks, flats boats, it floats im willing to borrow or go with. lol. labor day i was off l pond rd on gheenoe going towards black point seein massive amounts of large black drum, reds all over and trout. and also just beside the channel 10 guides chasing spawning mogans. long story sort, big black drum, not prepared. gave up at 1. but anyway i borrowed a kayak yesterday, my sleeping habits r so out of wack i didnt even sleep and around 5 i was outside anxious, preping tackle and organizing. i was there exactly at sunrise putting off of L pond road, the water was low and i slowly made my way toward black point. the flat is dead!!!!!! no blacks no where, and today i bought 40 shrimp, slowly kept yaking toward black point. zig zagging tryin to find reds or anything. absolutley dead!!! of course. i yaked toward the shore and literly find reds within 5-10ft of shore beneath all the floating grass. kept going for 2 miles. spooking reds every 50ft. i casted shrimp at them had 3 bites but still not much. caught one no pic. paddled 45mins against the wind to get back. i still didnt mind being out there wasting my time. and the water rose a foot and half by the time i got off the water. i never knew tides effected that far inland.

7½ miles

It was a beautiful morning before BOB (big orange ball) came out. I had so much fun that im thinking about buying a kayak.

I was thinkin on the Hobie Mirage pro angler because it can hold a lot of weight-Im not small hehe :D- and it has pedals intead of using paddles.

I can go further using my legs rather then my arms. I learned this when i was paddling thru some somewhat big waves because jet ski guys and people in boats find it hilarious to make BIG waves. It was my first time paddling, turning, speeding, and most importantly BALANCING! When i first tried getting in, i tipped over and i fell into the water. I didnt plan on swimming so i went with jeans and my yellow polo shirt...If any of you saw a rather large feller in blue jean shorts and a really baggy polo shirt at teh kayak rental, that was me:w00t:

Anyways, i got too tired using my arms to paddle and stuff. Id like to use the leg things on the mirage, so i was wondering if thats a good kayak for me to use.

Thanks!

B.A.C.K Club Gathering.

Got to the launch at 0 dark 30.

We headed out with the rising sun in pairs for a club fishing tourny.

There were some areas to hide from the wind.

Eventually there wasn't anywhere to escape the rain coming in.

My partner and I were not deterred and kept fishing. Lot more stable, comfortable, fishable then a canoe im used to, I just wish I could stand.
My plan was to hit up the NMZ today but when I got there it was closed b/c of the shuttle…..lame! So then I decided to see if I could fish the southern lagoon…..drive all the way and no luck, all shut down.
I decide to fish dummits cove, I finally get out on the water and the sun is all the pretty far up. I clear the mouth of the canal and didn’t see anything on the way out. Then the sun disappears, great! No more sight fishing…..

After quitting on trying to sight fish reds I just start drifting, I drift all the way from the mouth of dummit to granny cove and only pick up a couple of small trout and a 20” trout on the skitterwalk casting at potholes. Made another cast to a pothole and a big trout inhales it and starts pulling some drag…..I thought it was a tarpon at first b/c all I saw was a big splash and a shiny silver side but it didn’t jump. I don’t know quite how long it was (didn’t want it out of water to long) but it’s pretty damn long, my big arm makes it look small but you can kinda get the idea on the size by looking at the size of the skitterwalk compared to the fish: scaling off the skitterwalk it measures 28".......

I sat in the mouth of grannies for a while with gulp soaking but nothing. Start heading in about halfway to dummits I finally see signs of reds……tailing 10’ in front of the yak!!!! I couldn’t believe it didn’t spook. But it slowly just swam off after the yak drifted almost over it made a cast in front of it and bam! Fish On!!! After a little battle I get it to the yak, grab it, unhook it and reach for the camera and it flips out of my hand and back in the drink……oh well. It was prob. 30” or so.

I kept heading toward home but it was pretty windy and no sun so by the time I saw the reds I was on top of them…..I prob. Spooked 5-6 more single reds just lying in the grass (im guessing they are waiting for the sun to get active)

I start to round the corner of dummit and finally see the tails in the air (this time from a distance) I stake out and throw my gulp crab over to it…….about 15s later fish on!!! Starts to rip some drag and it comes off……..DAMN!!! Somehow my crab got foul hooked so the point was hidden……

From there I went it at about 11:00……not the best day on the water (would have been great if the sun was up) but I had a great time in my first yaking experience.

Camera Tri-Pod`s for the Yak

I just picked up a Targus "Grypton Pro XL" Tri-Pod for my Digital Camera to be mounted on my yak,but wasn`t looking foward to drilling screw`s into my lid`s or yak,for a tie-down :w00t:

The Leg`s on this Tri-Pod are Modular, and can be formed into any Shape,so it will grip the lid of my certer consoule in the yak.....it can be wrapped around my leg to keep it safe,....wrapped around my Paddle for Underwater Shot`s.

Wally World........$20.00

I`ll get some Pic`s tomorrow for yall ;)

show us your kayak

every show what your plastic ride is on the water.

Heroes On The Water

All - here's a link to a recent article concerning Heroes On The Water:
Heroes On The Water

Best Kayak/Wading trip

Dad and I headed back in to our salt marsh only to find the paddling to be extremely challenging because of the freshwater dumping in from the solid week of rain we had. Once we got to the spot where I usually catch reds in the morning, we found the water to be high and tea stained with no baitfish activity. It was not looking good. With lots of casts with no hits we were about ready to look for a new spot when I decided to try off a nearby oyster bar. On the first cast I caught a nice red and then dad wades over and on his first cast..

Cast after Cast we pulled in reds and snook! I have been catching some nice size trout and even some inshore grouper. Also, the tarpon and huge sharks have also rolled in on the flats. However, today I loooked at the weather channel at 7 a.m. and it said 70% chance of rain. Now this is where most people say "well looks like i am not going fishing" but with me it was the complete opposite. I got together my gheenoe and made a short drive to the launching place. I caught some bait and started fishing. It was looking really promising bc theyre wasnt any wind (yet) and I caught a jack after about 5 minutes of arriving. A little later I hit up this other spot and saw my bobber go under and this is what was at the end of it! [w00t]

After the 5 minute fight on 20 lb leader I let the old fella go to swim another day and then it started to downpour so I headed home. But what a morning it was on the water :D

Flatoutfishin Kayak shirt

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to get some feedback on my new kayak design. We got back into a creek that lead to a nice shallow flat off of the ICWW. I told my friend about a spot the reds always seem to feed every morning no matter what the tide is like and I don't think he believed me until his second cast produced a nice red. All in all we caught about 12 upper slot reds standing in one place, this was one of the biggest

After the sun came up and the reds eased away from where we were, we headed to a nice hole I usually catch them in on low tide, but the tide did not get low enough for the action to get hot, but just as we were thinking of leaving, I get a strike, and I could not move it, then it took almost all of my line on a blistering run. The fight was long and I wondered if I could ever get the upper hand. At first we had no clue what it was but then after noticing a non-stop shake in the fight I knew it probably was a jack, finally it was confirmed.

Goomba Photos

The BACK (Bay Area Canoe & Kayak) Club monthly paddle gathering we call a "Goomba".
This month we visited Robinson Preserve. However, they would not bite anything.

So Easter morning before I went to a party I decided to go out to the same area in the old plastic. I caught some bait and paddled over to the area. Few casts later I had nice snook come unbottoned! So I rebait and whip my bait out in the same spot and ZZZZZZZZZZ! Fish on. I faught this redfish on light tackle for awhile before I got him in. I took a quick picture and let him swim another day. A little while later I had to leave for my Easter Party. He was just below 24".

Thanks for reading along

March B.A.C.K. Club Report

This month we invited Dr. Ron Taylor from the Fish & Wildlife Research Institute (I think that's what they call it now). Anyway, he's the Snook Doctor. he has been the leading snook research biologist for more than 20 years.

Ron was as entertaining as he was educational. They have been tagging snook and logging migration patterns in rivers on both sides of Florida. In a 3 yr span, they found that not all snook migrate out of the river in the spring as we all once thought. In fact, one fish they tagged never left the river in 3 years. Another fish left the river in the middle of winter. The most amazing story was of one snook tagged on the east coast that showed up on the west coast. It is thought that he made the journey through Lake O! Absolutely incredible information we all learned that evening.

Our monthly Goomba was held at the south end of the Skyway today.
It turned out to be a pretty bearable day despite the blustery conditions. We did well to stay in a protected bayou most of the day. There were plenty of fish for everyone!

Cheryl found a nice little beach for our shore lunch but she kept escaping from the camera lens. We had a great turn out despite the chilly temperatures. We had 17 entries for the Large Trout Tournament. Not everybody caught trout but there were stories of big jacks being caught that were worth the $5 donations. Ladyfish were pretty thick as well. We had a couple of anglers find a hole full of silver trout but that breed does not grow as big as the speckled trout. When we gathered back at the lunch site (yes, I said "lunch) we found that it was a woman that won the Gentleman's Bet.

1st Place - Sharon (RockinNReelin)- 19"
2nd Place - Norm (Norm)- 18½"
3rd Place - Mark (CooKnFish)- 17"

The potluck style shore lunch was very tasty! It is a CooKnCrew tradition to have a trout dinner on New Years Day as a token of good fishing for the year to come.

The wind sucked paddling out to my spot but once we got there it didn't bother us so much. We got out of the boats and stood on the oyster bar and I caught my limit in less than an hour. I spent the next 4 hours releasing fish while I waited for Butch to catch something. The trout ranged between 17"-21", also caught a couple of small flounder and a ladyfish.

Pan fried fillets met with my homemade tartar sauce between the halves of a bakery fresh sesame seed bun. Here's to a full year of many trips and tight lines!

A kayak angler is born... part deux

Wednesday I took my uncle out for his first kayak fishing trip. While the fishing was slow for us I did manage to find some trout for him. I decided to do some exploring at the very low tides and while working a deep hole I had my uncle casting the edge.

The lure of choice was a mirrodine(chartreuse belly and back).

As the mirrodine was worked back along the edge in some seriously skinny water I see my uncle's rod jump hard as the water in front of him explodes. It comes right back up as he missed the hook set. Well the fish wasn't happy with that so it turned and charged the lure again. This time the water explodes again and this time the hooks hold and line starts ripping.

The fish never came up so I was hoping he had a good red and not a snagged mullet. After several more runs and a great fight my uncle landed this nice snook.

This snook was a surprise to me out there but with the warm days we had prior I guess the snook had journeyed out to warm itself on the flats.

We moved on back to join Mauso1 where my uncle caught a few more trout.

Maybe I have influenced a father and son to take up this great sport we all enjoy.
