You see some debris along the shore from time to time, but no real big piles of trash to speak of. However, on this leg of the trip we did run across some areas that really could use some attention. On one particular shoreline, we ran across a portable generator amongst other things. One of the things that really stands out are the plastic drink bottles. Thinking back, I really wish I would have taken a picture of that.

It seems like a long way and every time I start thinking about how close I’m getting to the finish, I look across the bay to where I have to go and it seems even further away.

Due to 9/11, a large area around the base has been marked a security zone and is restricted. The signs marking this security area are about a mile from shore, which would have dramatically increased the amount of paddling I would need to do, as well as pose a safety issue. If something were to happen, it would have been in relatively deeper water with no way of getting to a shallower area. So, for those two reasons I decided not to attempt to paddle around this area, the thought did cross my mind, but it would not be today.

(Central Florida Kayak Anglers) I was really glad to have them along with me today, as I was feeling a little bit under the weather. After much discussion it was decided that we would launch from the Gandy and paddle towards Picnic. This would get us away from all the boat traffic and give us a little bit more time in some of the better areas. In some ways, this should be difficult I think. If it were easy to do this, I don’t think it would mean as much. But it doesn’t compare with the difficulties that those suffering from Heart Disease go through everyday, so I think I can deal with the wind and the waves. Today was tough, but nothing compares to watching someone you love waste away from congestive heart failure. I thought of my dad a lot while crossing a choppy and rough <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Hillsborough Bay.

Joining me today were a couple of good friends Chuck and Terry. I have fished with Terry on many occasions and I have to say this about her, she has come along way since catching that first Lizard fish. She is “Hard Core” and truly a great angler. She will stay out long after others have called it a day.

I met Chuck once or twice at the ramp at Cockroach, but we have never really fished together before, he has wanted to join me on the earlier trips, but we never connected. Chuck is also a great kayak fisherman; he always seems to be consistently on big redfish or snook, so it was really nice to have him along today. Chuck and I share an unfortunate bond in this undertaking; we have both lost someone we cared very deeply about to Heart Disease. I was really glad he joined me today; I just wish the conditions had been better.

It wasn’t too bad at first, but once we got out into the open water, it got a whole lot worse. We were getting what I would call “Bounce Back”. This would be where the waves are hitting the sea wall and bouncing back out towards the open water. Terry called it a confused sea, I called it insane. I am new to kayak fishing but I am loving it. I have a 12ft pelican kayak. I live in the northern end of hernando county and I am looking for some tips on where and how to fish.

I also would like to find someone who wants to go kayak fishing together in my area. At least until I get a second one for my wife. I am only 45 but I am retired so weekdays are actually better for me.

A great day on the water!!!!

Although I wasn't very motivated I did manage to get out on the water by 9am. Much to my dismay I could see people already fishing my hole. I decided I would head there anyway and hope they are decent folks.

After a good paddle I arrived just in time to see slik nik hook into a snook on top water and lime sider hook into a nice red (guys if i have your names mixed up forgive me) Not to be out done I started casting and soon hooked into a huge pinfish...and another pinfish.
Now these two are hooking into snook reds and trout beside me and here I am catching pinfish. Now I am really unmotivated.

Soon my spot paid off and I was back in the hunt. A top water strike had a red flying out of the water to take my bait. A short fight and a quick picture and this fish was swimming free of me.

Another red a bit later took a golden bream cal. These fish were not large but they had fight to them and they were all very well fed.

Now I am thinking I can find trout here and then go in search of snook. I need the trout first. Here is one. I am upset that the trout didn't pose nicely. Instead of sticking his tail out straight he curved it back towards me making theis 23" trout look much smaller. He fought like a red in that he never came up to the surface shaking his head like many trout do.

Even the smaller trout were feisty and fun to catch. This one took many strikes at the bait before becoming impaled upon the hooks. The fun part was the water was clear enough to watch him turn and come back on each strike.

Unfortunately thats the end of pictures but not the days adventure. I caught many more trout and a few more reds.

At the end of the day I worked some mangroves along a nice cut and found a few snook. Neither wanted to hang out in the water while I got the camera ready. They both swam off alive and picture less. They both completed a slam which was 2 for the day. Nothing major but 2 slams none the less.

An incredible day on the water certain to say. I think my final count was 2 pinfish ( :( ) 9 trout, 5 reds and 2 snook. A few unknowns in there as well.

Superbowl Paddle!

My plans for superbowl sunday were simple. Catch fish, cook fish, drink beer and watch football. Well you goto love it when a plan works out.
We launched as the sun rose and fog rolled in. I got to the launch just before the fog and had a moment to see the sun and the fog. We were quickly enveloped in a thick fog which just got thicker over a few hours.
Here I am giving Jeff some grief over the fact he had live bait.

We paddled off into the fog and soon we could not see anything except the fog. If not for my gps I would have felt a lil worried.

I soon started catching some small trout but since we were looking for a fish dinner we left that area in search of bigger game.
Well I found some bigger fish but not quite what I expected. As I paddled over a flat I spotted a fish laying belly up on the bottom. Something was sticking out of its mouth. Turned out to be a good size trout with a catfish stuck in its mouth. It was too big to swallow so the trout tried to cough it back up. The catfishes spines on its fins went through the trouts mouth and head, leaving it permanently stuck.
We pulled the trout out of the water and clipped the spines of the catfish and got it out of the trouts mouth. Amazingly the catfish swam off and the trout was still partially alive. We tried to revive it but the trout was to far gone for help. Into the cooler it went.

Finally around 11 am the fog started to break and we could see our destination island through the fog. We couldn't head that way until we could see it since it did not show on the gps nor had it been marked. It is now.

Finally the fog moved off bringing in good sunshine

After working these flats we moved on to a different launch with a quick pitstop for a burger. We wanted some sheephead and black drum for the fryer. We took the boats to a different area and relaunched. A long paddle to some docks we put the live bait to work. Get close to a big dock and pitch that shrimp way up under and hold on. After losing a few shrimp to smaller mouths my line went tight and I was quickly dragged up against the dock. A hard fight and many drag screaming runs later I landed a nice black drum (6lb+) Next cast I was able to get ahold of a nice redfish.
Jeff finally got past the lil fish and hooked into a nice black drum as well. After a good tug o war he landed this nice drum who was also destine for the fryer.

Falling from a canoe or kayak.

I'm thinking of buying a canoe for fishing in those no motor zones etc..
When you bring in a fish from your canoe or kayak, does it ever get hit by a shark? sorry but I'm really afraid of sharks, thats why i would never want to fall off......

Advanced Kayak Rigging

Cutting holes in a piece of plastic you rely on staying afloat can be unnerving for some. As long as you take your time and think about the cuts you're making, rigging your ride is only limited to your own imagination.

I have drilled many holes in many boats but this project was more extensive than adding a couple of rod holders or a rudder kit. The fact that it was my own boat made it a little more difficult. I didn't wanna butcher my baby!

I started out with the smaller holes first and mounted the stern light first. Having no access that far back, the use of a coat hanger came in handy to fish the wires to the access hatch behind the seat and then pass them along to the front hatch.

Feeling better about cutting holes in such a pretty piece of molded plastic but still not ready to bore the bigger holes to come, I went to work on mounting the fish finder. Utilizing the Scotty mount that was factory installed for a front rod holder, a Scotty fish finder mount was used with an Eagle Cuda 242. The mount was modified to accommodate having the wires come out from underneath. After grinding out a groove for the wires, a hole was drilled in the boat within the footprint of the mount. Some silicone was used to fill the gap to keep this a watertight installation.

It was time to move on to the switch panel. With multiple devices being used, I didn't want to hard wire them all to an "always on" type circuit because they would not all be used at once very often. A bead of silicone around the panel also keeps this watertight.

The real gut wrencher was adding the navigation lights. I didn't realize how big of hole was needed to mount these lights until they showed up on my doorstep. Cutting holes on the deck is no big deal but when you start making holes in the hull so close to the waterline, you invite a higher risk of water intrusion. It is a good idea to use too much sealant than not enough. It is easier to clean excess than trying to hunt down the leak and patch the holes after the fact.

The finished product was wired up and a test flip of the switches to make sure they worked. Only 3 of the 4 switches were used... for now. I may install some cockpit lights later.

The new rigging was unveiled at the B.A.C.K. I don't have a boat and havnt been on the water in about 4 months so I decided this would be the best way for me to get out there. I've noticed that most of the better kayaks run from $600-1000 but I'm only looking to spend no more than $300. I live in Orlando ( an hour drive to Mosquito) and work 5 days a week so I'd only be able to go on weekends, which is another reason I dont want to spend alot of money on it. Any suggestions on new kayaks in my price range or a trusting site I can find some nice used kayaks? Not looking for a kayak with all the extra addons, as long as it floats and has a rod holder Id be happy with it. Any help would be appreciated.

kayak types and brands Capt. The guy won this Sandpiper by Eddyline in the Ospreybay tournament. Since he has about 10 kayaks already he was happy to sell it to me. The kayak is made of cobonelite and weights about 40lbs. This is perfect to put on a flats boat to make the long run and fish even skinnier and closer to the fish via yak. (for better photo opportunities)

That was the idea I had anyways but it's been sitting in the garage for quite a long time. Today with the North East wind blowing 15-20mph and the tide was already suppose to be -.6 , I know there won't much water out there. Today was the day to breakout the Sandpiper.

The kayak hasn't been set up for fishing yet and I didn't really have time. All I grabbed was 1 rod/paddle/lifevest/bag of plastics/jigheads/a mirrodine/pliers and I was off. Pretty much bare essential. This turned out to be a blessing as the water was so low I had to drag the yak quite a ways. I didn't even make a cast until 8am.

However from 8am to 11am.. the bite was on fire. With this warm winter we are having I was catching lots of snooks out on the flats. 11 to be exact. I lost the mirrodine to a overslot snook that rapped me in grass and broke my 20lb leader. I added 7 reds (2 over slot) and 2 trout with mission fishin jig head and Slurp and gulp bodies.

It was a tough nasty windy day out there and many times I couldn't even stop the kayak and had to get out and wade. It was well worth the hassle. Today if you had a peddle Hobbie it would've been a big disadvantage as the water was too low rendering it, useless. The sandpiper did it's job as a lite transport craft to get to the fishing hole. I was impressed how it tracked without rudder. I might be be doing more yak fishing as long as I can keep the hassle of loading and unloading to a minimum =)

These pictures were done on the Optio W30 as I didn't want to ruin an expensive DLSR in these conditions. =)

Canoe by car

I have a Toyota Corrolla 2003 and I wanted to get into canoe fishing. I am exhausted! Hit the water at 7am and wasn't dry until I got outta the shower around 8pm. There was a kayak fishing tournament yesterday and the weather was much less than pleasant. Strong winds, VERY thick fog and drizzle. Plus it was a cool morning at 65. Water temp was close to the same. I did pretty good but once again fell short of winning. This was a slam tournament. Well I found my red and trout early on and then lost a snook that I needed to complete my slam late in the day. No one slammed today due to the hard conditions. If that snook had not thrown the hook I could have won. ARGH!!! 3rd tourny in a row where I fell just short. They say you have to pay your dues and put your time in. Well I must be getting close to that now. So close but yet so far...

As I said. It was a long wet chilly day. Also a great amount of fun. I wouldn't trade it for the world. Now here are some pictures.
My very first cast of the day put onto a mud flat about 6 inches deep was pounced upon by a feisty but small red.

The fog was already thick and would only get worse.

After missing several fish including the snook I needed to complete my slam I managed to get into a bunch of small trout that at least kept the excitement up.

After my last trout Jeff decided he wanted in on the action and drifted between me and the fish I was catching. Whata hole jumper!

The fog really started rolling in here. There are two kayaks in this picture. Close to the land.

Still getting thick. There is another kayak deep in the fog here as well.

Needing a change we moved to a different spot where after many ladyfish and some trout Jeff finally managed to find a snook. You would think a guy who uses the screen name "snookfinatic" would be able to put us on more than just one snook. ;)

Well the day was done at that point. We headed back to the cars, loaded up and went to the weigh in an hour late. Some friends were still there so we got to chat about the poor fishing and relax with a few beers and a good burger.
Ypu it was a long wet chilly day but one that was full of fun, friendship and fish. I would do it again in a heatbeat. Just not today since it is really cold and windy ;)

OK Trident

Picked up my new OK Trident yesterday. I havnt been on the forum in a long time glad to see everyone still fishing and doing well. Just wanted to ask a question. Do any of you guys fish from a canoe? Iwas thinking of buying or maybe even building a wooden canoe. I have never used a kayak and was wondering about the pros and cons between the two. I will mostly be fishing small protected waters. any advise will be greatly appriciated.

    thanks.

Ocean Kayak Big Game

I have put my big game up for sale. I met the kids and the people in charge at Emerson Point kayak launch.
After getting the kids used to being in canoes I led them through the mangrove tunnels into terra ceia bay. Once on the open water we started fishing. We explained to the kids where and how to catch fish. We all drifted apart but soon some of the boys were able to catch a fish or two.
Jeff and I were drifting some deeper water and found a steady trout bite. At one point the bite was solid enough that as Jeff hooked into a trout on top water he yelled to me that there were fish following. I made a long cast into the area and immediately hooked up. Jeff being the sportsman he is put the rod that had a fish on it and grabbed a second rod and cast it out. Whammo a third fish was hooked.
I quickly dehooked my fish and paddled closer to Jeff and caught a shot of him with his 2 fish on.

We continued with the trout for some time and I even pulled out the flyrod and was able to hook some trout on the fly.

As the tide pushed in so did the fish and soon we found some snook laying up in the potholes. We got out and started casting to them. At one point a snook came up from under Jeff's topwater and got an incredible strike by the largest snook I have seen in some time. I have never seen a snook the size of it jump as high as this one did. Unfortunately it happened so fast that Jeff was able to come tight and set a hook. This snook got away.
A bit later Jeff did manage to hook into a nice snook that was unable to throw the hook.

We were working with one of the kids trying to get him on a fish and after a few tries he finally hooked into a nice fish. A short fight later he was able to land a nice little grouper.

Soon after we headed in for a nice lunch of hotdogs on the grill. It definately was a fun day on the water and a pleasure to be a positive influence in these kids lives.

Paddle Fishing Tournament Series

I have become quite accustom to fishing tournaments in adverse weather conditions. During the Paddle Fishing Tournament Series (PFTS) event this weekend, the weather was not as bad as expected. It was breezy and there was a small shower that passed quickly towards the end of the day. There were 59 anglers to show up for the “My Lure Are Better Than Your Lures” (MLABTYL) tournament.

Each leg of the PFTS has a different theme and rules to make it an interesting event to say the least. The MLABTYL event is based upon choosing the lure you have the most confidence in and pitting up against the favorites chosen by the other competitors. Each angler can carry as many baits as they think they need for the day but they must all be exactly the same. If a person chooses a topwater bait, all baits must be the same make/model and color. If someone chooses a jig, the heads must all be the same weight and color and the jig bodies must all be the same type and color. Each leg in the series is a Slam event and the length of each angler’s largest snook, redfish, and trout is tallied. The prize structure is set so that the top three winners split the cash collected for entry fees and gift certificates are handed out for the largest of each species.

When the day was done, we all met at the designated eatery for the weigh-in. Everyone checked in with the tournament director and then those in the running for prize winnings were asked to submit their photo for judging. A couple beers and a cheeseburger later, the prizes were handed out.

Largest Trout – “Paddlearoun”, Dan; 18-inches
Largest Redfish – “Al”, Alnorito; 27-inches
Largest Snook – “YaknNik”, Nick; 24.75-inches

3rd Place Slam – “JMSnooky”, Jason; 62-inches
2nd Place Slam – “Apollobeachsam”, Sam; 64.5-inches
1st Place Slam – “JLK”, John; 66.5-inches

So, how did I do? In a nutshell, I did not place in the day’s event but I did increase my score for the season long standings. Now, for the long version…

This was my first tournament in the new Hurricane Phoenix 160 and I must say this is the most comfortable boat I have ever used for a tournament. Aside from being physically comfortable while sitting in the boat all day, I did not feel confined like with other boats that have consoles molded into the cockpit. There was plenty of room for the bulky measuring board that kept it within reach when I needed it and out of the way when I was not using it. I am also used to having water in the footwell, especially when I get out and wade. This boat is bone dry! Any water that makes it into the cockpit flows right out the drain hole.

I started the day of to a great start. I stayed away from the areas the bulk of the other paddlers fished. Everyone headed straight back into the bayou but I paddled outside the barrier islands and worked the flats. The tide was flowing out at a good clip, so I knew there would be fish feeding in the current. There were schools of mullet running through and it did not take long for a 16-inch trout to pounce on the DOA ¼ oz Gold Glitter Shrimp. I waded around the area and hooked into a couple of redfish but they rolled the hook out. The water level became lower with the flushing tide and the action move off as well so I headed to the inside to see if I could find more fish.

The water level dropped so low that I ran aground with the kayak. Not knowing the contours of the bayou very well, I trudged through the muck in the direction of mullet jumping in the distance. Along the way I found a few potholes but because I was walking into the wind, my approach was not the best so I bi-passed them for moment. I managed to get to a stopping point and anchored on the edge of a pothole. I fished for a few minutes while surveying the area around me then I started drifting back towards one of the potholes I passed on the way in. Letting the wind silently ease me to the edge of the hole did not spook the fish out this time. Using the DOA shrimp was much easier with the wind at my back as well. The hole was loaded with snook and trout. Almost every cast yielded that magical “thump” often felt when using that bait. Most of the trout were smaller than the 16” I caught earlier and the snook were all in the 18 to 21” range. I did manage to jump a couple of snook that were in the mid to upper 20’s but they unbuttoned before I could get them in.

Running out of time, I still needed a redfish to complete the Slam so I had to pull myself away from the fun of catching and get back to fishing. Every place I went that looked perfect for redfish did not pan out very well. It was tough keeping those pesky snook off my line. Then it happened! I felt the line go tight and the pull was a bit harder than the other fish I hooked into. For once, this fish did not jump out of the water and I could feel him bulldogging along the bottom. It boiled and rolled on the surface a couple of times during the fight like redfish often do. I breathed a sigh of relief and I finally got it to the boat but saw there was a stripe down the side; another snook. I kept fishing, drifting and catching snook after snook but then it happened again. I hooked a fish that stayed on the bottom. This time when it rolled on the surface, I saw that it was a redfish because I was standing in my kayak and had a better view of the fish. I got him up to the boat and made a rookie mistake; I grabbed the tail and lifted the fish by the leader. The leader snapped, the tail slipped out of my hand, and I was out of time. The weigh-in deadline was quickly coming upon us and I was not sure how long it would take to get there because it was about 20 miles away.

Nonetheless, the outing was a good ol’ friendly competition with the best people one could ever be beaten by. Did I mention having to paddle into a 20 knot headwind on the way back to the launch? I’m off in search of the Advil!
im looking for a hobie

yea im looking for a foot powered kayak i will probably buy it if price is resonable and probably in the next 2 months

Another Goomba Gathering

The Bay Area Canoe, Kayak club held their monthly outing at E.G. Simmons park the weekend of December 1st. On Saturday, the Sheriff Youth Ranch brought six young ladies to join us for a day of kayak fishing. These girls have been fishing the lakes located on the grounds of the living facilities in Bartow, FL and have been doing quite well with catching big bass.

The morning was a bit on the chilly side but the ladies showed up prepared for a day on the water. They brought a couple of fishing rods that they were planning on sharing for the day. B.A.C,K member, Jeff Harrell, works with the Youth Ranch and organized the outing. Jeff introduced the girls and had a few words for everyone. Roger Bouchard, president of the Youth Ranch, gave his words of appreciation. After all the speeches and “thank you” addresses, Jeff finally announced to the girls that they were getting a new rod and a tackle box full of goodies. The looks on their faces was priceless! It was like Christmas Day had come early.

Jeff Harrell

Roger Bouchard

One of the B.A.C,K. members, Terry Wilson, bought each girl a brand new rod & reel combo. Sharon and I put together individual tackle boxes filled with CAL bodies and jig heads from our own stockpile. David Blackwell from DOA Lures sent Deadly Combos and a DOA visors for each of the girls. Neil Taylor, a fellow kayak guide, pitched in some baits by Producto to complete the kit.

The boats were launched and after a few moments of bumper boats, they soon got the hang of paddling. They followed Jeff to the first stop and they all anchored around a hole. It was not long before one of the girls prematurely dismounted. Luckily the water was not very cold and the sun had started beaming down to warm the air. They all got a good laugh out of it and she got right back in the seat and started fishing like nothing happened.

By the end of the day, almost everyone caught some trout and a snook was also caught. A couple of the girls ended up in the water but this time it was on purpose. We came back in for a shore lunch that was prepared by a few of the club members. It was time to say good-bye to our young visitors and there was no doubt that they all had a great time. It was hard to tell who had more fun, the kids or the adults.

kayak fishing in the st.pete area

Any one have any hot spots for the month of november and december to fish for reds and trout from a kayak in the st.pete area any suggestions would be appreciated

                                                            thanks

                                                                     doug

This Just In...

The new kayak is in!
The Hurricane Phoenix 160 is a fishing machine. It paddles like a touring kayak but has a very roomy sit-on-top cockpit that is simplistic by design. With no hatches, straps or buckles to get snagged on makes this boat fly fishing friendly. The Phoenix 160 is 16' and only weighs 55 pounds. This is at least 10 pounds lighter than other kayaks because it is made of Trylon. It is stiffer, stronger, more abrasion resistant and has a beautiful shiny finish.
The new boat sets off the new look of CooKnCrew.

want to take up kyak fishing

what brand of kyaks are the best?? and the most affordable?? i want to use it to go out off the beach on a calm day or just paddle around the flats and mangroves in the river any help appreciated :)

Kayak Fishing Tournament November 11th

Don't forget Nov 11, PARADISE COAST PADDLERS CLUB

FALL KAYAK FISHING CLASSIC

Tourney weekend

1)Nov.10th Grand Opening of the PARADISE COAST BLUEWAY @ Everglades National Park (morning)
2)Nov 10th Captains meeting (evening) Capri Fish House (Isles of Capri)
3)Nov.11th Kayak Fishing Tourney Naples / Collier County
4)FEE---only $35.00
5)bring your own digital camera
6)Gift bag + 2 door prize raffle tickets for the awards ceremony
7)No stupid t-shirts to wash your car!!
8)Paradise Coast Paddlers Clubs t's are $15 if you want one(they are nice!)
9) 1st prize $100
2nd prize $75
3rd prize $50
10)We will start selling raffle tickets for our kayak Raffle in April. @ our Kayak Festival that also includes a fishing tourney
11)Places to camp & stay-- bring the family
KOA (Naples)- Collier-Seminole State Park - Glades Haven(Everglades City)
Marco Island Marriot

PLEASE FORWARD THIS INFORMATION TO OTHER CLUBS & FRIENDS!!!!

Thank You
Mike Devlin - president
http://www.paradisecoastpaddlers.com/
think I found my kayak...

http://boatstore.floridasportsman.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl_bo?boatcnky&1189951064

are these good kayaks? Or are there any existing kayak accessories that you feel could be improved upon? I am mostly interested in the pack-type accessories....chest packs, tackle bags, other gear bags, etc. I am doing some (I guess you can call it) consulting for a fishing accessory company and would greatly appreciate some input. Please forward any ideas you have to my email (jbull1229@yahoo.com) along with your forum posts. I live in Middle Ga. and am a looong way from any dealers that carry the particular brands I'm looking at. All the dealers (BassPro, REI being the two closest) can order for me and ship to their retail location. I have found a website that offers free shipping to any business address (not a problem) and their prices are the same as other dealers. The wife and I currently have a 2 person kayak and we each want our own sit-on-top. Right now we are leaning towards the Tarpon 120 Angler, 140 Angler or the Wilderness Systems Ride 135. They will primarily be used for pond fishing but several times a year we vacation at St. George Island and we always take our yak.

Thanks!!

Georgia Kayak Fishing

I realize this is a Florida site and mostly salt water fishing but wanted you guys and gals to know about our web site here in Georgia.

Until recently it was known as Atlanta Kayak Fishing but in a effort to branch out to the whole state of Georgia we changed our name and mission.
