Rigging Question for those with Jackplates

Cork repair and maintenance

Hey all,

I have a little OCD thing that drives me mad if my hands are wet while casting and retrieving. I have found cork to be my answer and I love using it. I built many a rod using those damn cork rings then shaping them on a lathe. Does anyone know how to recondition some cork that is starting to dry out a bit. Maybe some tongue oil or something but I need some help with it if you have any answers. Thanks,

Making a push-pole

I have discovered that push poles are an expensive item and am trying to get one for way cheaper. I was hoping to be able to make one from stuff around my house but that did not work out so I was hoping you guys had another way to construct one. I would not use it that often, and it does not have to be perfect or pretty, just something quiet to get me and my boat around. Thanks

Polling Platform?

I am looking for a polling platform to put on the back of my 16' carolina skiff. I was looking into having one built but the costs are well out of the range i was hoping. (avg $700) I was currious if anyone has ever built or known someone who has built their own platform. I know people who know how to weld so i was thinking i could create something any help would be great. Thank you

motor problems again

prolly something simple, but my 2 stroke 25hp evinrude will run at full throttle and wide open then it will loose power and i have to keep the throttle wide open to even keep it running. i thought of the carb for a second but if it can get up to speed and run fine then do that, then that shouldnt be it. maybe the float was sticking, but the float once open wide open won't close again till i let off the throttle some to stick. the spark plugs looked fine. the fuel lines good and the spark plug wires fine. water pump good so its prolly not the thermostat limiting it. very confused, i think i'll replace the plugs and wires. maybe the wires have a defect in them. idk, any imput or past experience would be appreciated.

Power pro

When re-spooling your reel with power pro is it nescessary to put mono on first? Like 2 yards or so.... I put some 20 lb power pro on and when the reel got wet the power pro would spin... i was like checking my drag and the the line was spinning individually on the reel. Did i not spool it tight enough or should i just put a mono backing at the beginning? this is really hard to explain, hope it makes sence.

Jack Plate Motor......HELP!!!!!

Has anyone heard of Land and Sea (Jack Plate Motors)? I have a jack plate that has a Land and Sea motor on it and it took a crap. I am looking for a replacement and having trouble finding one. I have seen a CMC motor for $200 but not sure if its a universal replacement or if you have to have a specific motor for a specific jack plate.

Thanks for your input, I need to get this thing fixed soon. Its only been a few days off the water and I'm already going stir crazy:w00t:

respinning props

anybody know of any places in brevard county that respin props, i have a prop with a rubber insert that'll act as a shear pin on my prop, and i know it can be fixed, but i normally have to send it out for 2 weeks and wait for it to come back, but i wanna fish now. lol. any tips would be appreciated.

2.5 yahama 2007 motor problem

I have a 07 4 stroke 2.5 hp yahama and it was used like 2-3 times in slat water than left and sat for about a year the guy said. It will only runs if you spray carb cleaner in the carb and it will run for 2 sec than stop. I cleaned the carb 3 times than tried it agian and nothing! Can someone tell me whats the problem?

erratic behavior from boat at take off

Last time out on the water, I noticed something awkward.Sometimes, the boat took off fine. Other times, the boat picked up speed REALLY slow. I did have alot of weight inside the boat and my prop hit a tree and got banged up a bit. Now the motor has a small vibration, I'm assuming it's because the crack on the prop. But, what can cause this sometimes slow, but sometimes fast take off?

Rod guide broke, need help

Well, as i was goin fishin this morning, i looked down at my rod, and i saw the circullar part of my rod guide was cut or somehow it broke, i bent it inwards on that plastic thing thats inside of the guide and it barely worked, and just went back to bed upon returning home.

how can i fish this problem?

I need help sizing a prop for my flats rig. The stats are 50 hp 2stk Johnson 2 cyl. 5500 rpm. Its going on a 800# flats boat with 500# men and gear. The builder says to us a 13.5x15pitch but I cant find one that size. The current 3 blade alum. prop has no markings and gets her up to 35 mph.

drop shot rig

When you talk about a drop shot rig do you mean a barrel weight on the end with palomar tied hooks running up the leader? I read a comment that using this rig with gulp sand fleas or lunker sauced plastic works for pompano. Question: what type/size hook is used? Perhaps a 1/0 circle?

If you use a circle what is the correct way (if there is such a thing) of hooking a plastic flea? If a circle hook isn't used please describe type of hook and recommend right way to put plastic on the hook.

Push Pole Repair 101

The boat I bought a while back came with a 20' fiberglass push pole. The push looked to be in good shape but the fiberglass was starting to shed. I of course talked to Cracker11, the go to person for boating questions, and he recommended to do a light sanding and repaint. Well, Cracker went the extra mile and got all of the materials to do the job for me for my birthday. (thanks again Tom)

Well here is step one and two in this thread:

Step one...

The previous owner had wrapped two sections of the pole in duck tape so that had to be removed. I didn't think much about the tape at the time of purchase seeing how I was there for the boat not the pole.

So , after the tape was removed I found out the tape was hiding something, some nice cracks, nothing major, but there were cracks under the tape. On the spike end there were 3 cracks with one of the three being the worst of all the cracks that I discovered. The foot end had a crack every quarter to half inch all the way around the pole all ranging from 8" to 12" in length.

Set two...

I took Crackers advice and sanded down the area around the cracks so I could lay some new glass down. The new glass is just for extra security, where the cracks were there wasn't any more flex in the pole compared to where there weren't cracks. But I'm always airing on the side of more is better. So I sanded and sanded and sanded. I sanded the pole about 1/16" smaller in diameter so I can build up some new glass and then sand it down to be smooth with the rest of the pole.

Well that's it for this time. Next step laying down some new glass and sanding the hell out of it again. After that I'll sand the entire push pole and slap a few coats of new paint on it to finish it off.

confusing problem

i have a 1992 25hp evinrude, everytime i start it up it sputters till i get into higher rpms, then it starts cutting out and kicking hard. in the water under a load it instantly dies. the motor shop screwed me and said it was the carb, charged me 222.66 to work on somethin that was not wrong with it, so im not goin back to them.

I have a 93 Suzuki 9.9hp that I use on my 14' Johnny,have had it for a little over 5 years now,cleaned the Carb/New Plug`s when I first got it, to get it running{Prrrrrrrring like a kitten}and has been the best darn motor I`ve ever owned.....Two pull`s in the morning to get her going,then one pull for the rest of the day.......

But over the past couple of month`s,it has started to run poorly,getting harder to start,and has now moved to Power Loss and Strange Hissing Noises,and even one Lock-Up after sitting a few days.....thought I had Carb Problems,so I Rebuilt the Carb,New Plug`s........it would run great for a few mins,then spit and sputter........so while bringing the boat back to my shop,the Right Slipper Spring broke at the Axle :w00t:,so with an extended stay,I started looking at the Power Head,getting ready to snatch it off,and I see this little Round Cover.........Then it Dawned on me:blush:, The Thermostat.....Man,Do I Feel Stupid.......3 Bolt`s{Two broke off in the head}and the cover was off.....the thermo looked like a Mud Covered Oyster :w00t:........had to pry it out.....Flushed it good,Drilled out the broken bolts,installed the cover,and ran it in the drum for an hour.......Runs like new :D

Not sure what damage has been done,I`m sure being overheated has not made it a better motor:P,I still need to take it out for a Power Run...but thats tomorrow....

My Question Is :

Should I replace the Thermostat,or just Toss it and leave it Open ?

Will it effect the Idle much during the colder month`s ?

Johnson outboard question

First off this is my first true outboard. I used to have a 5hp but it was a Briggs, so in a nut shell it was a lawn mower engine with a prop.

So here we go, I have a 1998 Johnson 60hp 2 stroke....My question is what kind of voltage should the alternator be outputting? Currently it is only outputting 12 to 12.5 volts. I was under the impression that an alternator is suppose to output around 13 to 13.5 volts to keep your battery charged.

I have to charge the starter battery every outing, is this normal? If the alternator isn't outputting the proper voltage will this have any adverse affect on the battery in the future even if I recharge it before every outing? I know one day I will spend the money and replace the alternator due to the low voltage output or just for piece of mind.

Just finished building my first rod.Everything turned out how I wanted except the wrap finish it looks like epoxy over sand paper but just on the hook keeper wraps and the first 3 guide wraps all the rest look great.I cant figure out what I done wrong. I used flex coat high build finish. Any advice would be appriciated.

I've already got a powerpole on my banshee, but don't have the remote. I'm realizing its a needed tool when I'm by myself on the front....instead of jumping around like I'm on hot coals to get to the back to lower it. Has anyone put on the remote by themselves? i just bought a quantum cabo nearoffshore mediumheavy rod and plan on buying their cabo 80 pt reel when it comes out. i plan on using berkley big game hi test 20# line for backing and then using a top shot of berkley crystal fireline 20# with a 100# flurocarbon leader. what knot should i use to connect my leader and mainline and then leader to my circle hooks? thank for the help

It's taken a long time but, finally, big changes in the 1994 Action Craft. I picked it up, today, from Bob's Machine. The new hydraulic jackplate, low water pickup, and skeg, look absolutely awesome!!!! Tomorrow, it goes to Gunn's Welding, in St. Pete, to have a couple of badly rusted bolts extracted. Then...................... I've got to wait till the 2nd, to take it to Quality T-Tops, in Tarpon Springs, for the new poling platform.

leaking grease

I have a 2005 50hp Johnson thats leaking a little oil by the prop. I would like to believe its just 2 stroke oil not burned of cause she smokes a little. I'm hoping its not a prop seal leaking crudded up gear case oil. Any suggestions?

Fuel Tank Trouble/Repacement

Was curious on anyone's experience with replacing fuel tank on a flats skiff. I have a 1998 19 Redfisher (Hewes). Was having engine trouble that after much $$$ spent, discovered that fuel and possibly check valve on fuel tank was bad. Probably from saltwater intrusion. Anyway, running great for months on surrogate 18 gal tank laying on floor. Need to take action to permanently repair problem. From what I was told by a friend, there is probably a checkball valve of sort on tank sending unit. This may be current problem along with somehow clearing tank of all unwanted visitors. There is a small access plate in floor directly above what I believe to be sending unit. Circular cap with pos/neg leads and 5-6 mounting screws. Pretty much only access to tank. Can't see actual fuel line, suspect is close by but hidden by foam filler. Anyone ever experience this situation and live to tell about? Thanks In Advance.;)

Shaft may be short

Hope I am not asking to many ????'s, but I noticed that when I took my new/used boat out the other day the troller kept coming out o' the water and it's adjusted all the way down. Can i get longer shaft or is there a better way to keep my shaft in?

Nav and Anchor Light Question ?

I have Flatskracker`s 18' Flatsboat over here for a Major Electrical Refit,he has recently installed a Polling Platform,and wants to clean up the Front Deck,so we have Two Question`s :

#1. Does the Anchor Light have to be Higher than the Polling Platform ?

#2. Kracker has a Nav Light on the Front Deck......I know because I`ve broken my Toe on the darn thing :w00t:..... Can I install a Red and a Green Light to the Top-Front of the Center Consoule,and get rid of that Toe Buster ?
