I usually rig up several shrimp before I go so I don't have to worry about gluing my fingers or skin together while I'm on the water. :D

RE: best rigging for a DOA shrimp

Hey Ken,

is that loctite superglue fast dry so i can bring it out wading with me and have it set after a few fish?

thanks, Nick

RE: best rigging for a DOA shrimp

PSJ Nick,

Here is the link for the Woodies rattle that fits in the hole in the shrimp that is on the underside just past the slide in worm weight:

www.woodiesrattlers.com/html/rattle_inserts.html

You don't need to superglue it, just push it in the existing hole in the belly of the shrimp just past the hole that the worm weight goues into. Push it in and let it stick out just a little bit of the plastic. This rattle is elongated and made of plastic. I will also use a glass worm rattle if the water conditions are a little choppier since it is louder.

I do use superglue at times to seat the straight shanked worm hook especially if it is a 4/0 size for the 1/4 oz shrimp. Once the hook gets ripped out of the shrmp several times and the plastic gets torn, just re-thread the hook into a better piece of plastic or superglue it back in. You can reuse the shrimp quite a few times by doing this instead of using a brand new one!

My favorite brand of Superglue is the Loctite brand since it can easily be re-used. i like the contol gel since it is very easy to apply and doesn't clog up:

http://www.loctiteproducts.com/products/detail.asp?catid=15&subid=34&plid=195

Good rigging!

KT

RE: best rigging for a DOA shrimp
KenT (6/10/2008)
Finally, I slip a Woody's elongated plastic worm rattle in the cavity on the bottom of the shrimp below the hook as this creates a little rattling sound when I pop the lure. You can use some super glue if needed to seat the shrimp (I use Loctite Super Glue - Reorder # 01-30380) if needed. This super glue comes in a 4 gram bottle (gel) that you squeeze along the sides. It's the only one I've found that does not dry out after you use it!
Hey Ken,

Do you have a link or somthing to the rattle you use?

and you just super glue it to the bottom of the shrimp under the weight?

does anyone do anything about the hook coming out of the shrimp after you catch a few (like a 1/4-3/8" or so)......ive been thinking of sticking a tooth pick throught the shrimp and into the eye and breaking it off so i wont keep coming out and affecting the action......or would the superglue you use to hold the rattle on there work?

RE: best rigging for a DOA shrimp

i def wouldnt change the rigging of the bait!

mark nichols made it like that for the action and slow movement it makes if your having trouble with the hookups when you feel them eat dont set the hook right away let them take it and eat it for a few seconds before setting the hook that is always how i get better hook ups when i use them. just remember patience is the key when using this bait.

also if you arent already using some i would recomend some kind of braided line pp or suffix the sensitivity of braid will make you feel the bite way more than regular mono and you might have a second or two to react better when the fish eats.:)

RE: best rigging for a DOA shrimp

The best thing I,ve found to do is add a second hook. 1st use the BIG shrimp to weed out the smaller fish, then once you have a smaller shrimp with it's tail nipped off (save it), remove the hook (it's smaller) crush the barb on both hooks, then thread the bigger hook of the bigger shrimp through the smaller hook eyelet while turning it and inserting the smaller hook point in the same hole that the big hooks comes out of, feed the small hook through like 2 lines back from the end of the shrimp and poke it out. it also adds some additional weight to make it sink faster.

It's kind of a pain but once you do it you can do it quickly, and the best part you are recycling all those tailless shrimp LOL.

Good luck,

Mike

:o)

RE: best rigging for a DOA shrimp

Yes, I slide the rattle in the little hole on the underside of the shrimp that is just below the hook. I don't usually remove the keel designed weight but you could if you didn't want the shrimp to sink very fast and just substitute the rattle for the weight.
You can also rig the shrimp weedless if needed but I usually like the traditional rig since I want the shrimp to fall away from the fish so it can get hit from behind. They usually hit it on the fall so make sure you let it fall to the bottom and snap it off the bottom, then let it fall again but make sure you let it fall long enough to hit bottom. Letting the shrimp fall to the bottom is the key!

Scent also helps especially in turbid water. I use Lunker Sauce on occassion. Would like to know if the Gulp spray works. Anyone using it with success?

RE: best rigging for a DOA shrimp

yep they both fit that's what i do to my DOA Shrimps. the worm rattle seems to help a lot... also any kind of scent works. spike it/ lunker sauce / gulp alive spray etc.

RE: best rigging for a DOA shrimp

Quick question for KenT, do you put the rattle in with the weight on the doa shrimp or do you take the weight out ? It has been a real go to lure when the conditions get tough. The fish really hit it hard and when I'm not fishing in tournaments which restrict modifying lures; I trick my DOA shrimp out to give me a huge advantage.

I start by putting an Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp 3/0 or 4/0 Worm Hook (LO95XBLG) which has the plastic holding barbs on it in the 1/4 oz sized shrimp as this creates a wider gap than the standard 2/0 hook which comes with the lure. I think the wider gap helps me stick more fish especially when using braided lines in the 10 - 15 lb range. I like the fact that the hook is very sharp and the black color of the hook just blends in with the lure. I use 25 - 30 lb Gamma Fluorocarbon leader tied to the shrimp via the Canoeman's loop knot, although with the turbidity of the water lately, standard mono should also work.

Snook and especially seatrout are crushing this color along Manasota Key but it will work anywhere along the beach and on the flats. Give it a try and I'm sure you'll be impressed!

Here is my newest modification.....adding chartreuse color on the tail of the # 382 Silver Holographic Shrimp by using Spike-It Worm Dye! Works really well and aids in being able to see the shrimp while making presentations to snook in the surf!

I also add it to the standard Nite-Glo color because the dye makes it much brighter than the regular Glo/Chartreuse tailed shrimp that DOA makes which is color # 385. It also works when you can't find the #385 color in local tackle stores so you can just make your own by dipping the tail of the #305 Nite-Glo color! :)

Hope this helps!

Tight Lines,

RE: best rigging for a DOA shrimp

thanks, i'll try some lunker sauce. you guys are very helpful.

RE: best rigging for a DOA shrimp

I agree with fish4reds.:D

You can always add some scent to the lure.

I love using the Carolina Lunker Sauce Shrimp Scent.

Not only can you use it on the DOA shrimp, you can use it on other artificals and live bait .;)

RE: best rigging for a DOA shrimp

If your getting a lot of short strikes you can always put some scent on them, sometimes that will entice the fish to bit and commit (believe it the real thing) to the bate a little better. I have always used Owner hooks for live bait, including shrimp, and have very rarely missed a good strike. I'm wondering if using an Owner hook(or any sharp hook) and rigging it like I do a live shrimp may get me more hook sets as a result of the hook position on the bait changing, and also the hook being much sharper? What are the pros and cons of using them out of the package as opposed to being more creative? Please give me your thoughts on this..thanks!
