Took my wife Becca out today for a nice relaxing day on the IRL. We set out from Port St. John a little late due to the lack of bait at all the bait shops. We hit a few bait shops and all had the same story except for one, sorry no live bait of any type. I was told that one of the shrimp boats was sitting on a sand bar out in the middle of the Atlantic somewhere and the other couldn't get a full load cause the shrimp are too deep. We ended up getting 2 dozen shrimp and that was it, the lady at the bait shop said she had to make sure she had a enough for her local guides for the morning (Monday morning) and had a 2 dozen limit, that pissed me off a bit.

Well after the whole fiasco with the bait we hit out first spot, the south power plant, a not so secret spot. Its just a good place to run to for some nonstop action, even though some fish may have three eyes. After many cats and ladyfish and one lonely little Whiting we decided to hit the ICW and cruse for a while to cool off. We headed down to an island that Becca and her sister used to come to with there dad when they were little. Becca, Spike and I played on the beach for a while and just took in some rays and relaxed.

Anyways, back to the fishing...

We hit a few flats on the way back to the ramp, but nada, not even a puffer.

Gotta love the DOA's

Still had a few shrimp left so we headed back to that not so secret spot and dropped a few more lines. Several hit and misses and we were down to one last live shrimp. I rigged it up for Becca and she made a cast, and another cast, and another cast.  Nothing seemed to want this shrimp, what the hell was going on. I've never had a live shrimp last more than 30 to 45 seconds at the power plants.

All of a sudden...ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ, line was being ripped off the reel like crazy.

Keep in mind this is the same girl that landed a 25" Snook a few weeks back and still rubs it in my face everytime she gets a chance. So now I'm thinking this can't be happening again, she's killing me everytime we go out together. I think its the bikini, its hard to fish when you got eye candy to stare at. ZZZZZZZZZZ, fish on, she's yelling "GET THE NET, GET THE NET" as Spike is now tangled in fishing line as he freaks out cause Becca's going nuts. What to do, what to do, grab the net or help the dog.....Grab the net of course! (the dog was ok by the way) This fish would give Becca an inch and then take 3 feet, after 3 to 4 minutes we see silver. Great a jack to complete the trash can slam, but wait, what is this, could it be, HOLY CRAP ITS THE POMPANO OF ALL POMPANOS!!!! Becca not knowing how significant and delicious this fish is that is coming aboard is just happy she got fish of the day, AGAIN. We finally got the pomp in the boat after a good 6 minute fight and she was ecstatic. This is one of the largest pomps I've seen in person.....measured in at 18" at the fork and weighed 3lbs.

Like I said that was the last shrimp and the last cast, 5 minutes prior she was ready to go and I convinced her to just use up the rest of the shrimp that we drove around for at the start of the day. She has now out done me on biggest Snook and biggest Pomp, but as long as I keep getting her out there that's all that matters to me.

u must have gone to cap hooks by the north power plant. they never have good bait, there shrimp r smaller then my pinky, and the junbos r the size of my pinky. garden street has the real bait, but its kinda far for bait from psj. nice pompano, i was at the power plant today, lots of ladies. soon the tarpon will be there in huge numbers. but its very hard to get bait at the tarpons level. me and ron r goin to try a down rigger this year. lol

Hell yea people still catch fish there, mostly cats and lady's, but yep there are fish in them there waters.

The weekend following the closing of Snook season my wife got a 25" snook with a big belly.

So yes the plants do produce fish.
