| | Just finished building my first rod.Everything turned out how I wanted except the wrap finish it looks like epoxy over sand paper but just on the hook keeper wraps and the first 3 guide wraps all the rest look great.I cant figure out what I done wrong. I used flex coat high build finish. Any advice would be appriciated. Thanks. |

| | Hi, did you use a filler under your top coat, I normally put at least two coats of filler on then the top coat. If you notice your thread is a little fuzzy when you wrap then use a lighter to remove the fuzz hold it off to one side and not directly underneath the thread. You can very carefully sand the epoxy back then reapply the the top coat. I hope this helps Big-Pete

| | Thanks for the reply . I called flex coat a few days after I posted my question and the guy there said basiclly the same thing. I sanded them all down and recoated with 1 light coat and they all turned out great. This was the first rod I have built so I was glad to see it was a rookie mistake and was'nt a big problem. Thank you for taking the time to reply. |

| Big Pete said it all about the first catch on your own rod. It is a sweet feeling much like when I tie a fly pattern that the fish just eat up and everyone wants them.
Those that know me know that I make my living from my outdoor writing and photography although at one time I tied for a living until tying was not nearly as fun. Every now ant then I will get a 100 plus special pattern request for the traveling anglers and if the money is right I'll tie them for the guy but the true reward is tying a new patters, handing someone a handfull and saying hey, just let me know what the pick-up felt like. Did he inhale it. Even better is when one of my captain buddies calls and asks me to tie a "new pattern'' just for him and his long time client with huge funds (something like a small, harmless rodent mogul making money off a shrill voice tuxedo bearing cheese eater." I'll tie several patters, go out a day or two before the charter and see what'w what. It thrills the clients to no end when a guy shows up at 0' dark thirthy at the boat ramp and hands the captain a secret little box full of a secret concotion of glue, thread, feathers and some other silly components at times. Hey, I ain't picky, I'll tie flies for disney tickets, I am not greedy. So new rod by you, an awesome feeling, trust me. chris cwaltersart@yahoo.com

| | Thanks for all the replies. I actually gave the rod to a good friend of mine but I'm sure i'll be happy when I see him catch a fish on it. As for me I will be starting on a new rod in a few days when all the stuff gets here. I am sure I will keep this one. I have built 3 so far gave the other 2 to my sons so now I am a little more comfortable with building. After mine is done I will be starting one for my wife so if anyone knows where to get a pink blank let me know. Thanks again Sprat. |

| | mud hole tackle sells pink blanks and guides to match you can also find rod building stuff at cabelas as well. |
