| | I recently moved from Breckenridge Colorado to Islamorada Fl. Having truoble finding fish to cast to. In rivers the fish are very predictable as to where they will be. Here things seem to be controlled by tidal flows with movments during periods. I find it hard to look at a flat or area and be able to pick out the area where water is moving. The tailing fish are easier when they can be seen but in three foot of water I must have gone over so many. Number two- I come from the land of small tippets 6x and 7x were not uncommon to use on a daily basis. A five weight seemed like a huge stick. My problem is tarpon, they take the fly, go aitborne and pop another fly lost. God help me if a huge one strikes! My mindset is to use way to small test leaders and not the right schock tippets. Won't even get into stripping a strike (all those years guiding trout and preaching "Raise your rod tip to set hook, Please don't strip your strikes" have come back to haunt me!!! |

| | I moved here from alaska myself and know what you mean...I started out by just sitting and watching the water....I would take a 6ft ladder out on the flats at low tide and set it up in swallow water...then I would sit there until the entire tide would come and go...within 2 weeks I saw my 1st bonefish...then I took note of the time of day/wind direction/tide and started from there...after 2 weeks I got my 1st bone...it took 3 months to get 3 more with a 7 week dry spell...I still went almost everyday...after a while you will start to develope certain patterns of fishing...after 6months it started to click and I caught 30 or more in 2 1/2 months...take what you know and make it work...thats what I did...now I am tagging bonefish and also expect at least 50 or better this yr...last yr I hooked over 50...I also fished basically the same water to make sure there isnt a fluke...this will be my 2nd full season...also I caught bones in every month this yr...another 1st...now I am totally confident and expect at least one every time...best day was 6 out of 7 ...ditch the 5wt...I use 8wt for bones and 10 for tarpon...these are just MY opinions but I hope it helps...email me if you want...good luck |

| | I fish both fresh and salt water, and although I have never flyfished for trout, I sure enjoy taking the 3wt out for bluegill! When I fish saltwater, I use a 12lb tapered leader, but have started tying my own as of late. Enjoy the new endeavor!! |

| | Whisperer got it right, it just takes time, for the tarpon I would use a 10or 12, now youshould still be able to get away with a 10, the giants havent moved in yet, I use 15 lb class tippet, and 60 lb shoch, some people use heavier, I dont really find it neccessary, when fight the fish DO NOT high stick the rod, it WILL snap, instead fight it with the but of the rod, keeping the first half of the rod almost unbent, when you get the tarpon near the boat, fight it down and dirty, which means when the fish swims one way, you pull the opposite, it swims right, you pull left, that whips em quick, and which means a wuick release, the only time I will use a 12 is when I am dredging for poons, and when I do that I step up to 20lb class tippet, and a 80 lb shock, and a big ugly black rabbit strip fly with copper flash, what absolutly gets hammered by the tarpon, anyways, good luck, and tight lines. |
